Invitations to the Australian Open Wild Card Tournament

Donald Young, Alexa Glatch amoung initial players invited to compete at USTA's Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs

Wednesday, November 11, 2009 4:25 AM ET
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., November 11, 2009 -- The USTA announced today that Atlanta’s Donald Young and U.S. Fed Cup team member Alexa Glatch are among the initial list of players invited to compete at its Australian Open wild card playoffs held during the 2009 Infinite Energy Atlanta Challenge at the Racquet Club of the South, a USTA Certified Regional Training Center in Atlanta, December 4-7. The event will feature an exhibition match on December 4, with the wild card playoffs commencing the next day.

Eight men and eight women will compete in the wild card playoffs. The USTA secured the opportunity through a reciprocal agreement with Tennis Australia where the two national tennis federations exchanged wild cards for the 2010 Australian Open and 2009 US Open.

“Our wild card playoffs support our philosophy of giving players a chance to earn opportunities to compete at the highest level and allows our top emerging players to challenge each other,” said Patrick McEnroe, General Manager, USTA Player Development. “This year we partnered with T&S Events to create an event that allows tennis fans to watch these talented players battle for a berth into the Australian Open.”

Five men have been offered a spot in the event: Ryan Harrison (Bradenton, Fla.), Jesse Levine (Boca Raton, Fla.), Wayne Odesnik (Weston, Fla.), Rajeev Ram (Carmel, Ind.) and Young (Atlanta).

The six women invited to compete are: Madison Brengle (Dover, Del.), Glatch (Newport Beach, Calif.), Christina McHale (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.), Asia Muhammad (Henderson, Nev.), Alison Riske (McMurray, Pa.) and Coco Vandeweghe (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.).

John Isner and Christina McHale earned wild card berths into the 2009 Australian Open men’s and women’s singles main draw events last December at the USTA’s wild card playoffs, which were held at the USTA Training Center Headquarters in Boca Raton, Fla.

In addition to the wild card playoffs, the Infinite Energy Atlanta Challenge will also feature an exhibition on Friday, December 4, featuring 7-time Grand Slam doubles champions Bob and Mike Bryan, Mardy Fish and John Isner.

The final field for the wild card playoffs will be determined in the next few weeks.

Only one that I don't want to get it is Asia, just because I don't think she's ready, personally. She needs to play more ITFs and get some match experience first. I think Sloane and Ester should have been invited... but other than that, the USTA did a good job with their picks.

That's cool! Are you anywhere near Landisville? There's an ITF tournament there in 2010.

Re: Invitations to the Australian Open Wild Card Tournament

We need to come together and bombard the USTA with emails saying:

Asia Muhammad sucks. Stop giving her so many opportunities.

I don't think Brengle and Glatch should be invited either. Brengle especially has shown that she is going absolutely nowhere so why not give a younger girl, like Ester Goldfeld, an opportunity? I will never understand the morons that head the USTA.

Aw seriously?? I would have made the drive for that actually! That's really a bummer... the ITF in Cleveland was only a 10k but it was awesome because you get to see all these girls that you root for actually play. Plus you see some other that you didn't know about. I had just as good of a time at the ITF as I did in the Cincinnati men's tournament. I wish there were more up by us... all the ITFs seem to be in Florida, California, or somewhere down south.

Agreed... I like Madison, but she has stayed in the 150-200 range for a couple years now... maybe this could be her one last chance?

Asia has potential but she has pretty much fell flat the past couple years.

I also think that Ester should have been given a chance. Christina was given a chance as a 16 year old last year, and she won the whole thing.

Landisville is about 30-40 minutes from where i live in Pa . They held a 10K earlier in the year that Laura Granville won .

Eight men and eight women will compete in the wild card playoffs.

So, there'd be two more players yet to be invited.

I am so jealous. Wow your winter break is early. Unless you are in college, then I guess not.

Thanks for the info Harju. I'm glad two more girls will get the chance. Hopefully the USTA picks well.

Re: Invitations to the Australian Open Wild Card Tournament

Madison Brengle (1) vs. Julia Boserup (8)
Alison Riske (2) vs. Grace Min (7)
Christina McHale (3) vs. Ester Goldfeld (6)
CoCo Vandeweghe (4) vs. Asia Muhammed (5)

Cohen OUT, Min IN

Bad decision from USTA. Madison Keys or Lauren Davis should have been the alternates. Grace just lost this week 6-1 6-1 in the Eddie Herr junior tournament.
