LOS ANGELES -- Australian Open champion Serena Williams Thursday withdrew from next week's WTA Tour event in Los Angeles because of a hand injury she suffered at Wimbledon.
The same injury prompted the younger Williams sister to pull out of the WTA tournament in Cincinnati and America's Fed Cup semi-final against Russia in Vermont in July.
"It is with great regret that I have been forced to withdraw from the East West Bank Classic's tournament due to the thumb injury I suffered in Wimbledon," Williams said in a statement.
"Its always fun playing back home in LA and with the most talented draw ever, I was looking forward to prepping for the US Open against good competition. I will continue physical therapy and hope to be back on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour soon," said Williams.
Williams was hurt in her loss to world No. 1 Justine Henin of Belgium in the quarterfinals at the All England Club last week.
She also was plagued by a left calf injury that caused her to collapse to the court in her dramatic fourth-round win over Daniela Hantuchova.
The Los Angeles event, played at the Home Depot Center in the suburb of Carson, starts on Monday.

CARSON, Calif. -- Serena Williams withdrew Thursday from her fourth consecutive tournament because of a lingering thumb injury.
Williams was seeded fourth in the East West Bank Classic that begins Monday in Carson, near her hometown of Compton.
"It's always fun playing back home in L.A.," she said in a statement. "And with the most talented draw ever, I was looking forward to prepping for the U.S. Open against good competition."
Williams said she would continue physical therapy. She injured her left thumb and calf at Wimbledon.
Maria Sharapova is the No. 1 seed in the East West Bank Classic. Jelena Jankovic, the losing finalist last year, is seeded second, and Ana Ivanovic is No. 3.

SAN DIEGO, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Serena Williams has withdrawn from next week's Los Angeles Classic due to a lingering thumb injury that has forced her to pull out of five events since Wimbledon.
The eight-times grand slam winner injured her thumb at Wimbledon in her dramatic fourth-round victory over Daniela Hantuchova before going out to top ranked Justine Henin in the quarter-finals.
Williams has since pulled out of Fed Cup and tournaments in Cincinnati, Stanford, San Diego and now Los Angeles.
Speaking at the San Diego Classic, where his other daughter, Wimbledon champion Venus, is playing, father Richard said Serena was not even practicing.
"She can't hit the ball yet," he said.
The Los Angeles Classic will feature world number two Maria Sharapova, number three Jelena Jankovic and number five Ana Ivanovic.
