WASHINGTON, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Former world number six Chanda Rubin is one of eight American women awarded wild card entries into the U.S. Open in New York at the end of the month, organisers announced on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old American, a winner of seven WTA singles titles, has played an abbreviated schedule since last year's tournament due to a nagging knee injury that required surgery last autumn.
Currently ranked 204, Rubin has often represented the United States in Fed Cup play and was a member of the U.S. Olympic tennis team in 1996 and 2004.
Promising 20-year-old Ashley Harkleroad will also head to New York, the world number 142 recently began playing again after a nine-month break due to injury and an illness in her family.
The other six wild cards were awarded to Mary Gambale, Alexa Glatch, Carly Gullickson, Angela Haynes, Jessica Kirkland and Shenay Perry.
