NEW YORK (AP) - In a match delayed at the start by rain for three hours 15 minutes, Ashley Harkleroad upset top-seeded Julia Schruff 6-3, 6-2 Friday to move into the semifinals of the GHI Bronx Tennis Classic.
The 20-year-old Harkleroad, winner of two Challenger titles this year, will face fifth-seeded Camille Pin, who outlasted Hanna Nooni 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
"The delay didn't bother me," Harkleroad said. "I'm used to this kind of weather from Wimbledon. It was nice beating the top seed and it will give me greater confidence going into the U.S. Open.
"I'm taking next week off and will be rooting for my husband when he plays in the qualifiers."
Harkleroad married ATP Tour player Alex Bogomolov last December. He was eliminated in the second round of this tournament.
In men's quarter-finals on Friday, top-seeded Lukas Dlouhy beat Takao Suzuki 6-3, 6-0; Brian Vahaly defeated Kristian Pless 6-4, 7-5; No. 4 Thierry Ascione overtook Nicolas Mahut 6-7 (13), 6-4, 7-6 (5); and Edouard Roger-Vasselin rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory over Scott Lipsky.
