Bandwagons

Bandwagons... we all know about them. We've seen them. Maybe joined one or two and some we've jumped off before the ship sunk. But what is one bandwagon you would never join?

Venus might as well get her mail forwarded to Serena's shadow. She's going to be there forever!

Jennifer Capriati
Maria Sharapova
Justine Henin-Hardenne.

Sometimes i feel like I jumped on the Serena bandwagon, because when I became a fan (Wimbledon '02) she was peaking so it feels kinda unfair.
It was almost too easy to be a Serena fan when shes dominating. But I stuck with her through 2004 and always will, even after retirement. Ill always support her period, not just the tennis. I just love her so fuckin' much.

BTW, Serena was in Atlanta today, at Six Flags! I missed her.

Well I used to be a Justine fan, I really liked her and honestly rooted for her except against the sisters and felt somewhat bad when she lost to other players. I even felt happy for her when it was all over and she beat Serena in Charleston 2003. I even supported the comments she made after that match because I thought it was good that she was believing in herself more, but when she did that dispicible act in the RG SF my support for her went all the way out the window. She became the most hated tennis player in my eyes. So much talent, but willing to stomp on Serena's heart just to get a win.

Knizzle, you and I, are there with Justine.

The funny thing about Jennifer is that I think I may like her. I definitely like her fight and she interests me because when I look at her, I don't think she can do half of what she does so that automatically ups my respect level. I actually miss the girl.

i used to be a massive Jen fan (after going through a period of disliking her immensely) i love her fight and passion, she reminds me of Serena in some aspects. i liked her a lot when Serena finally got over her mental issues and started beating her again after the USO QF last year, and her comments about "i always get bad calls, maybe i deserve a break" (something to that effect), shes now firmly in my "neutral" bracket.

Yeah that comment really ticked me off. Jen doesn't get more bad calls than anyone else she just complains about the calls more than anyone else.

I don't like Jennifer Capriati very much. She's probably the player I dislike the most currently. In fact as of writing this post she's the only player that I can think of that I dislike.

you know what, for an element of fun i'm gonna pic my favourite match of the year for both sisters since 2000. feel free to add any.

Venus Williams

2000. Venus def Hingis USO QF 4-6 6-3 7-5. THAT SMASH that Hingis didn't bury that would have given her mp...am i correct? Venus was just fighting for her life at the end of this match. this was one of the first matches i was jumping and screaming up and down to and it was so exciting. i kinda miss the chucky-venus matchup. there was so much tension at the end, when Venus won, she was so shocked...she was mouthing how she didnt know how she did that. and i dont either.
2001 Venus def Jen Miami F 4-6 6-1 7-6 omg rotflmfao this has to be one of my favourite matches of all time. i remember i was out and i asked my dad to tape it for me (he didn't. men) but i got home in time for the final set. that woman is such a fighter. it was like 8 match points right? damn. has anyone saved more than that in recent memory? i remember Jen hit a shot on mp and she thought she won but it was called out fascinating.
2002 Venus def JHH Amelia Island F 2-6 7-5 7-6. i'm sure a lot of you remember Glenn? well i knew him from GoTennis. he was a Williams hater, i was a Justine hater. im not sure why we ever talked or got on but we did. anyway we were watching this match on Eurosport but following with each other on MSN. and it was deep into the second set, and he was laughing about how his fave thrashed my fave. i was like "just wait. Venus will come back." i think i was saying it more to shut him up than that i actually believed it, but slowly but surely, and to his horror, Venus came back. i was loving it . brilliant match from both, i had the tape somewhere but i cant remember what happened to it
2003. Venus Williams def Kim Clijsters Antwerpen F 6-2 6-4. im sure everyone has their own idea of a match that Venus played her absolute best in but this is mine. unfortunately, most Americans never got to see this match from what i know. Venus was just amazing. Kim couldnt do anything. the second set was one of the best sets ive seen of womens tennis EVER, and thats from the heart. Venus was on point with everything racing to a 6-2 5-2 lead. then Kim had to play the best tennis of her life to pull it back to 6-4 and on serve. it was such a dog fight with million stroke rallies ending with a winner. i remember the ES commentators saying there was no better showcase for womens tennis than the second set. absolutely.
2004. Venus def Karolina Sprem Berlin SF 2-6 6-3 6-4. this. match. was. the. fucking. bomb. quite possibly the best womens clay court match of the past 5 years. 1st set: Karolina treeing EVERYTHING and no answer from Venus. 2nd set: Venus ups her game through sheer determination and battles back. 3rd set: absolute dogfight. Venus twisted her ankle at the end of this match and im not surprised. Karolina was hitting the corners on everything and Venus showed why she is possibly the best athlete on tour. the way K-Lina was playing she would have beat most other players in 2 but not Venus. i know i sent a few people tapes of this match.

Serena coming up....

Here's mine SJW:

2000 US Open semi def Hingis 4-6, 6-3, 7-5: SJW said enough about it

2001 Wimbledon final def Henin 6-1, 3-6, 6-0: 2 of the most dominating sets of tennis I've ever seen from Venus 1st and especially 3rd sets. Great serving in this match. 3rd set was frightening.

2002 Amelia Island final def Henin 2-6, 7-5, 7-6: Great change of strategy on Venus' worst surface and obviously great fight. Love the leap of joy at the end.

2003 Wimbledon semi def Clijsters 4-6, 6-3, 6-1: Obvious reasons. The last set was a grasscourt clinic.

2004 Berlin semi Venus def Sprem 2-6, 6-3, 6-4: I don't know how Venus pulled this one off because Sprem was just firing from the hip with more pace then I think I've ever seen. Venus just used her movement and some better angles to fight Sprem off.

2005 Venus def Clijsters 6-2, 6-3: I know everyone is thinking WTF??, but Venus was hot as hell in this match. I have this on DVD and she played out of her mind. It was the best match she's played all year start to finish. She really munched Kim that day. Honorable mention to Venus' QF-F of Wimbledon this year.

Serena Williams

2000 loses to Martina Hingis Canadian Open F 6-0 3-6 0-3 ret. surprising that it's a loss, i know. but i didnt get to see her much this year. the first set of this final was some of the most powerful demolishing play ever. to beat 2000 Hingis 6-0, it had to be. i was in Canada at the time, around the time i was becoming a proper tennis fan as opposed to "the only tournament every year is Wimbledon". i know she had that awesome run at Wimby which Venus put a stop to, but none of the players she beat were of the calibre of Hingis. the beginning of the second set....foot problem. uh oh. i was enjoying the beatdown of one of the relatively few players i knew on the tour. i was proud of her, she kept on trying until she could hardly walk anymore. from that point on i thought that the only person who could beat serena when she plays top form (ala first set) was injury. guess that's still true.

2001 Serena def Kim Clijsters Indian Wells F 4-6 6-4 6-2. not the prettiest of matches, both quality wise, and crowd wise. i think i remember the headline "teenagers make over 100 UFEs" or something. whatever it was, it was a lot. this is when i fell in love with her. i couldnt understand why the crowd were booing her like that. i was like "what the hells going on?" i dont remember much of what the commentators were saying, i just wanted her to win. i kept quiet in this match just hoping that she was ok with all the shit threw her way. but when she won, and did her victory speech, "id like to thank all of those who supported me today, and those who didnt i love you anyway" was something of UTTER CLASS. i mean, i clapped her at that point, that was awesome stuff from a KID for christ sake. i want her to go back to IW once more, win the title, then never go back just to show them what they're missing. but at the same time, if she never wants to go back there ever again i understand it completely
2002. beginning of the Serena Slam. so many to choose from but i'll go with this:
Serena def Martina Hingis Miami QF 6-4 6-0. awesome. just awesome. she couldnt miss. remember her diary? she said she was trying to win every point and she "pretty much did". i love it when she plays like that. second set she was just in a league of her own. Chucky looking helpless. at this point i liked Martina again. but i couldnt help but laugh. Serena took her ass, stomped her foot all over it, then handed it back to her at the hand shake. her year was already looking pretty good after that fucking twisted ankle (grrrrrr *shakes fist*), but maybe this kicked it onto a new level.
2003 tied. Serena def Clijsters Australian Open SF 4-6 6-3 7-5. need a i say more. 5-1 final set. 2 (?) mps. against "Aussie Kim". blisters on one foot. extreme heat. couldnt find the court for shit. SAVED ONE MATCH POINT WITH A VOLLEY AT THE NET! this was Williams vs Belgians day, started at like 2a for me. i'm still in school in 2003, and have to be up the next morning at 7. i get up to watch Venus C-walk all over JHH, one down, one in the final, one to go. Serena on next. memories of Loit . quickly down and out at 6-4 5-1. i pray yet again just make it 5-2 serena. cool. just make it 5-3 serena. cool. just make it 5-4 Serena. omg. 5-5...6-5...no way....she did it. im fucking jumping up and down at around 6.30 in the morning! screaming and everything. i didnt even have time to go back to bed, i got up and had a shower and got changed i didnt even worry about the lack of sleep i just had a smile on my face all day.
2003 part II. Serena def Henin at The Championships 6-3 6-2.
this was revenge. the papers were billing it as so. i felt it was. i couldnt believe Henin at the FO but thats a different story. seeing Serena in tears made me and at the same time. i'd been for a couple of days in the first week and the ladies Quarters on that Tuesday (centre court. witness the All American 4th of July Venus vs Lindsay, Serena vs Jennifer). that thursday...i was nervous as hell. and to make matters worse, it started raining just as they came out on court. sigh. more nerves. later on they come back out and Serena is looking the business. focused. determined. just how she should be. in no time she races to a 4-0 lead and i was fucking over the moon. then 4-0 becomes 4-3 and i become disheartened. she stops the rot and takes the first set and quickly goes up in the second. i was happy as hell i was enjoying every minute of it, it was fabulous Serena proved that she was still the far superior player when everything was equal. at the end of the match the interviewer tried to get her to comment on her feelings and how sweet revenge must have been but she wasnt biting, she was just like "im happy to be in the finals of Wimbledon again" and being all girly. she was so funny. she knew she wanted to kick her ass
2004 Serena def Sveta Kuznetsova Beijing F 4-6 7-5 6-4. Serena was the Russian Slayer at this tournament, her previous 3 opponents coming from that country. then up in the final was Sveta, and as USO Champ, obviously no stranger to Hardcourts. this match wasnt on tv but it was on the web. Serena was playing like Serena does...flashes of brilliance coupled with flashes of mediocrity. 6-4 5-4 and Sveta serving for the match. i thought it was over. closed my web page. then i thought, no if you dont believe then nothing will ever happen. opened it back up. that game Sveta had 2 mps and they were duly saved. Serena goes on to win that set and i believe she was up 5-1 in the third right...which became 5-4 rotf. but she held her nerve and won the match and she was so cute in the post match interview: "ive never won a tournament on my birthday before" hahahahah. love her

yup definitely from similar ones. trying to pick reminds me of how many absolutely brilliant matches they've been involved in over the years, i could have easily picked the two Wimbledon ones as well. i hope we have some more clinical performances this year and then i'll be able to chose. so far i just loved everything about Venus Wimbledon. for Serena, i just loved everything about her AO. hopefully they'll both have an equally brilliant USO, culminating in them facing off for the title. that would be awesome.

For Serena:

2000 Canadian Open final: I remember watching this destruction in the making and marvelling at it. Then came blisters I think that hampered Serena's movement. Really disappointing.

2001 US Open def Hingis 6-3 6-2: I never saw someone serve so well in my life. Serena played so under control and smooth. Moved beautifully and played very well at net(how did Serena lose her volleying aptitude from 2001-2002??) Anyway the aces and service winners at the end of each set just made me LMAO @ Hingis. Oracene even had to shake her head like "This Hingis girl has no chance against my baby"

2002 US Open def Venus 6-4, 6-3: Venus had absolutely no chance against Serena in this match. Frankly it was just a beating. Albeit maybe Venus could have played better, but man.

2003 Charleston semi def Davenport 6-1, 7-5: For a set and a half Serena was treeing. She teed off on everyone of Lindsay's serves first and second and hit winners from everywhere on the court. Everything she did turned to gold. She served amazing at the end of this match also.

2004 YEC tourney: I can't pick one match, but I enjoyed Serena's fight in this tourney. She was almost gone against Myskina and Mauresmo, but fought back to advance to the finals. Honorable mentions are Miami final and Wimbledon QF and SF(restored my faith in tennis).

2005 Aussie Open SF def Maria 2-6, 7-5, 8-6: 3 match points saved against biggest nemesis, 8-6 in the third?? Nuff said.

Jennifer's antics/words bothered me for maybe a few days and then it just went away. The blame was on the ref for me.

As far as matches, I seriously to this day enjoyed Venus beating Martina at the US Open in 2000. At the time I was in college and did not know that a few of my floor mates were also watching the match and to hear us all scream and yell at the same time was very amusing.
