Venus Struggles to Beat Molik in Dubai
Wed February 25, 2004 07:47 AM ET

By Barry Wood

DUBAI (Reuters) - Second seed Venus Williams overcame a tough challenge from Australian Alicia Molik, 6-3, 6-4, to reach the quarter-finals of the Dubai Open on Wednesday.

Possessing a big serve and heavy groundstrokes, the powerful Molik provided difficult opposition for Williams, who was playing only her fifth match after nearly seven months out injured.

Williams, who received a first-round bye, struggled to put her first serve into play and was punished by some fine returns on the second.

The American came under early pressure against Molik when she was forced to hold off two break points at 1-1. But Williams stole the only break of the set in the next game when Molik put a forehand wide.

Williams held the upper hand in the second set but failed to convert her opportunities. She allowed Molik to recover from 40-0 down in the opening game and wasted three more break points during the seventh game.

The 23-year-old then had to fight off a break point before holding for 4-4. A weak service game from Molik allowed Williams to break to love and serve out for victory.

Williams made her comeback from an abdomen injury at the Australian Open last month, where she lost to Lisa Raymond in the third round. She then played one match at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo before defaulting her quarter-final against Chanda Rubin with a knee injury.

Williams wins, Capriati loses in Dubai
February 25, 2004

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Venus Williams' return from injury was a success. Jennifer Capriati's was not.

Williams beat Alicia Molik 6-3, 6-4 Wednesday to reach the Dubai Open quarterfinals, while Capriati lost to Eleni Daniilidou 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Williams was playing her first competitive match in three weeks after a right leg injury.

``It was one of my most exciting wins ... because of all the hurdles I've been through. I wanted to go out there and play, without being injured or in pain,'' said Williams, a four-time major champion. ``My leg is a lot better. It's not 100 percent, but I was able to do much more than before.''

Capriati, who was out with a bad back, saved three match points at 5-3 in the second set before losing her first match of the year.

``I was a little rusty, movementwise,'' the third-seeded Capriati said. ``I was fairly fatigued at the end. A third set would have been too much for me.'' It was Daniilidou's first victory in four matches against Capriati. In other matches, fourth-seeded Anastasia Myskina defeated Magui Serna 6-1, 6-4, fifth-seeded Ai Sugiyama beat Nicole Pratt 6-2, 6-2, and eighth-seeded Conchita Martinez overpowered Maria Elena Camerin 6-2, 6-2.
