With the Fed Cup being held in South Africa the week before this event had the largest draw of year. Crowds respond as they did for the Fed Cup-total attendence was at 85,000. This makes thisd the 4th best attended event of 1972 behind the big 3 slams.

For the first time non-whites are allowed to compete. Among the women it is African-American Bonnie Logan who breaks the color barrier here for women.

Junior Alison McMillan was cramping so badly that #9 seed Joyce Williams went to help her. Play was held up for at least 3 munutes. Alison indicated she could on and did just that-4 games later upsetting Good Samaritan Joyce 7-5 in the third.

The Wade-Chanfreau semi is interrupted for 10 minutes when Gail is stung by a bee on the roof of her mouth while sipping a drink during a changover. Wade, a nurse, a doctor, and photographers work to get the stinger out. The whole time Gail was laid out with her mouth wide open.

Oddly enough the delay helped Chanfreau more than Wade. Virginia's game now lost it's sting as Gail fought back from 1-4 in the second to 3-4 before Virginia finished her off. The other semi looked to go to 3 sets when Pretorius led Goolagong 5-2 0-40. Gong was having one of her "walkabouts". She woke up just in time save 3 set points, sweeping 17 of the last 20 points.

Virginia slashed her way to a one set lead in the final then fizzled before a capacity crowd of 7,000. The Brit is now 1-3 vs Evonne for 1972, her lone win being in the Australian final. When asked about the first set Evonne repled, "Ir doesn't worry me when I lose a set. it only makes me play harder." Close or not, crowds are enraptured by the Goolagong-Wade matches here.

Draw note: Mick notes that Marion Lloyd-Wronsley was listed as "Mairin" in the 1973 thread. Which is correct or standard for her?

Draw note: * John Dolan has 7-5 6-4 for this match--For now I'm going with the WT score.

Marie Neumanova becomes the first non-seed to win a WT Tour Pro event. The Czech stuns #2 seed Melville in the quarters, survives sudden-death match point in the semis vs Harris, and then stops top seed Billie Jean King. In the Harris match the Aussie served and came in to volley on sudden death point, but dumped a backhand in the net.

King's semi vs Liem (who has two forehands as she switches hands with her racquet) is rained out at 5-2 in the first set. Thus King had to finish her semi earlier in the morning before the final.

Billie Jean on the final: "It was extremely windy but usually I play well in the wind. She just played far superior and deserved to win."

Neumanova, who serves left handed but plays right-handed, broke King at 3-3. It was enough for the first set. Marie took five games running for the second set. This is the biggest win of Neumanova's (later Pinterova) career. She is almost dwarfed by the huge trophy standing next to a smiling Billie Jean.

The top prize money was like manna from Heaven for Marie. She was so poor that she arrived in the US in Jasnuary with a suitcase, 1 racquet, and five dollars. To make ends meet Marie called lines on other matches for $5 per match.

Even getting to the US was a hurdle:
"There are so many who want to go abroad, and not all can go. So when I wanted to come over here, I had to ask my Federation..then the minster fo foreign affiars" (p 106 of WT-Jue issue). At the last minute her Federation backed out of the promised airfare. Undaunted, Marie borrowed the money for the flight.

Earlier in the week Billie Jean's racquets were stolen from here car. She had to borrow Tam O'Shaughnessy's sticks to beat Teeguarden.

Harris played two sudden death matches this week. Before losing the semi she saved five match points to vanquish Molesworth in a 3 hour quarterfinal.
