Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

Unfortunatley Friedsam lost 4:6 4:6 in wimbledon 1st round against Gasparyan. It was a good match, Friedsam did not play bad but Gasparyan was stronger today.

So with a second round she could almost qualify to US Open , now she needs about 70-80 points to qualify

25K ASCHAFFENBURG

Anna-Lena FRIEDSAM (GER) [3] vs. (WC) vs. Caroline WERNER (GER)
Qualifier vs. Qualifier
Alexandra VECIC (GER) (WC) vs. Natalia SIEDLISKA (GER)
Isabella PFENNIG (GER) (WC) vs. Jule NIEMEIER (GER) [6]

good decision to take a WC here after he could not play Versmold last week because of doubles in Wimbledon!
She probably needs some time again to get used to clay but at this level that shouldn´t be a big problem, QF hopefully against Niemeier in that Quarter full of Germans, which could be an interesting match, guess healthy ALF should win the title here but we´ll see how it goes, there are some dangerous players at this level as well....

Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

lost her QF today 67 60 36 to Niemeier after two easy wins against Werner and Lutzeier before!
Disappointing obviously although it was clear that Niemeier would be tough as she has a great and aggressive game herself when she is on but ALF once again did not take her chances, first set she was down 1-4* and then Niemeier gave her the chance to come back (as she often does) but ALF herself wasted a 6-3* lead in the TB (unlucky as well at one point but she should have won for sure after she managed to comeback to 5-5....
Shame as she won´t make it to NY now but all chances for Melbourne, if she stays healthy, she just has to get stronger again when it comes to important points and I hope that she can play a few weeks now in a row as well without any problems (Palermo,Karlsruhe,Hechingen)

I don't think NY is over yet. She still has a chance in Palermo.

Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

well, she could have played a few more tournaments in singles but she decided to focus on doubles, so I guess she can live with it now that it probably won't be enough for NY in singles.
I am also quite sure that she will be in NY anyway for doubles with Siegemund but that could mean that she will miss the chance to play a tournament in the 2nd week of NY in singles again but we´ll see..

Anyway, she entered Palermo with her SR of 50 and with the new "Serena" rule she won´t be able to face a seed in 1st round (was like that in Bol at least where she was "9th seed", so it should be like that again now as well as she would be seeded with her SR of 50 in Palermo as well....), so yeah, there is still some hope for a QF or in ideal case SF but that will be very tough!

If she and Siegemund continue to Play more Doubles and gain Points she has a small Chance for Tokio 2020. Friedsam is in 2nd place in German Doubles Ranking for Olympics and could be a Partner for Grönefeld AS well

Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

In the beginning of the year it was tough for her to get into any events at all with her ranking, then she had some really good runs but also a few unlucky close defeats, some of them very costly for precious WTA points (Putintseva, Schmiedlova, Gasparyan, Niemeier), plus she missed a couple of singles tournaments for doubles. I still think she should focus on singles more but maybe playing the Olympics is a big career goal in general and she sees potential with Siegemund and Barthel for it.

Let'see what she can do next week, I'm not too optimistic but she's usually always a bag of surprises.

What worried me today more than anything was the inability to change tactics. She got killed absolutely every time Niemeier ran around her BH and played the FH inside in, totally exposing ALF in the rally. Her serve was also a bit hot and cold.

Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

She will face Stefanie Vögele in the first round of Palermo. Will be not that easy, but fingers are crossed .

Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

8. Teichmann (SUI) vs. Gavrilova (AUS)
Vikhylantseva (RUS) vs. Q/LL
PR-Friedsam (GER) vs. Voegele (SUI)
WC-Trevisan (ITA) vs. 2. Cornet (FRA)

Could be a pretty close match against Vögele, those two had tough fights in the past as well but could have been tougher obviously, I hope that she can beat her and then Cornet probably, who plays the final today in Lausanne, so she might be tired a bit, tough to say what she can achieve with this draw.....

Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

Friedsam 6-2 7-6 (6) over Voegele. Anna-Lena made it a bit difficult for herself in the second set, she was in control when a break up but then gave away the lead too easily. She fought well to turn the tiebreak around from 3-6 though. A loud come on from her at the end. This young lady really wants it on the tennis court, you can clearly see that.

Re: Anna-Lena Friedsam

Now that was a much needed TB win for ALF after those unlucky TB defeats before (Putintseva,Schmiedlova,Niemeier)
Easy first set after 0-2 down, in 2nd set she wasted an early break herself, had to save a SP at *45 30-40 and then was down *3-6 in the TB but managed to come back with 5 points in a row, good for her confidence for sure!!

Probably Cornet next, let´s hope that she can surprise there and play a good match, her 1st serve needs to work, if she wants to have a chance!

I really hope, that she will come back into the Top100. And it is really possible, and that she really wants it, should give her enough confidence.

Alf is two games away from entering US Open Q after all.

Cornet is having one of her infamous MTs, so you'll never know how it ends.
