"There’s something about Mary Pierce"
Deccan Herald, Hyderbad
Hyderabad, Jan. 31: Pushing her own trolley loaded with luggage including racket-filled bags, biggest draw of the WTA Indian Open, Mary Pierce, slipped into the city largely unnoticed and sans the traditional fanfare at the Begumpet airport on Friday night.
Those gathered at the arrival point did not seem to have a clue about the tall bespectacled beauty and it was only after the official Mercedes Benz cruised in to pick her up did they realise that someone popular was in town.
Pierce was coming from Tokyo, host to the on-going Pan Pacific Open tennis championship but did not show any signs of jet-lag and was all smiles speaking to Deccan Chronicle.
“I’m excited,” she said on being asked about her thoughts of playing in India.
To another query, she said she hadn’t yet spoken to her doubles partner for the tournament, city girl Sania Mirza.
Having played in hot conditions at the Australian Open in Melbourne recently, the Frenchwoman expressed confidence of coping with the Indian heat and humidity.
It was however unfortunate that when Pierce was willing to talk more, the Globosport official who had come to receive her hurried her into the car. So much for good PR
Also on the flight from Singapore was WTA official Phillipa Stewart and Argentina’s Clarissa Fernandez who “was looking forward to playing in India.”
Chanda Rubin and Elena Likhovtseva who are playing in Tokyo are scheduled to arrive by Monday.
