Thumbs down Australian crowds treated another Jelena poorly.

Jelena Jankovic, just 17!!!!, who worked hard to qualify for her first grand slam maindraw and who lost to Coetzer in the second round was treated in one word: pathetic!

One of you guys (cant rememebr who..maybe rob?) claimed u thought Jelena was getting booed? can u give us an account of what u saw if thats ok?

btw! I was wrong when i wrote in that thread they were pro-jelena, as i did not know the whole story! There was a cheering squad AGAINST Jelena because she was Jugoslav. Apparently Jelena won the first game very easily, and then about 30 Croation supporters with Cro. flags, their faces painted in Cro, etc came in and took up a section of the court.

They were against jelena from what i hear. they Sang some Croation songs to put her off, and said things in cro-serb which had apprently disgusted Jelena enough so that she approached the umpire in the first set complaining about it! The guys causing the trouble left soon after but the damage was done! Poor Jelena went down 2-6 0-2 after winning the first game very confidently!

Congrats to the youngster for rebounding back and putting upa fight. Amanda won 6-4 in the third which was closely contested and Jelena can go home proud of her first main draw...but the thing is we dont know how well she wouldve gone had she not been distracted.

Good luck on your road to the top 100 Jelena. After this week her rank moves from 192 to 142, and shes close to a main draw entry at the French!

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

This is terrible, not just because of Jelena, but any player having to put up with this crap. It's a dissapointment that when/if Dokic goes back to play in Australia how she will be treated.

If Dokic plays in Australia again, I feel tennis officials will try to suck up to her, put her on Center or VP or MCA. But the spectators .... I can understand her hesitation.

Poor Jankovic, she seems like such a nice grl! Good Luck in the future Jelena!!

Dont confuse those idiots with the typical Aussie crowds!

Their just dickheads that know nothing about tennis, and were obviously bored cos they had nothing else to do.

It's pathetic.

Bad luck Jelena, but a great effort this week regardless

it is a massive generalisation to equate a pack of moronic croats with an 'australian crowd', as it obviously had nothing at all to do with australia. this relates to a deep and centuries old conflict in the balkans which australians have nothing to do with. comparing jankovic's treatment to that of dokic is pointless as well, and quite frankly stupid. the australian crowd was not against dokic because she switch to yugoslavia, it was solely because she left australia. if dokic went and played for Great Britain she would have received exactly the same reception. although i felt sorry for jelena in some ways (bc of her father's obvious influence), do you really think it is so unreasonanle for the australian tennis public (in general) to feel betrayed to a certain extent? i know i did. i really did not think dokic was treated as badly as some people make out either.

Schnyder Lover - I was talking about how Dokic will be treated when she returns ... will she have a constant "hate" crowd following her matches and booing her? ect ect. Dokic wasn't treated very badly ... i think switching to Yug was mainly good ol Damir's idea ... Jelena has even hinted this.

'Australian crowd' in the thread title is very misleading if what you say is true. It sounds like a small Croatian minority, which average Australians have nothing to do with.

I disagree that she was treated badly only by the Croatians. A friend of mine was at the match and he said that he never seen hostile crowd as that before. He says that everybody was booing Jelena and even a guy next to him said something about "the bitch with the same name as THE bitch who plays now for that country!!!"
I just can't imagine what would Dokic go though if she ever decides to play there again!

Oh give me a break LMAO

This would have to rank up their as one of the most pathetic posts Ive read.

Like people would really associate someone who has the same name as Jelena Dokic, as being a bitch also. Geez, how stupid do you think we are? You, as a Dokic fan obviously, are just trying to cause trouble. A friend was at the match? lol...

Yes, oh please lets shield Dokic from us barbaric savages....

It's not hard to believe. I know people who ARE that pathetic. They're usually the most well-to-do people too. Sad.

It is not about having the same name, it is the sentiment that a friend of mine (who was obviously at the match, but i don't care if you beleive it or not) got from the crowd.
So, do you think that they gave 17-year-old girl such a horible time for no obvious reason? Motivless hatered! Is that sounds bit better to you?
It is clear that I am Dokics fan, but that doesn't mean i have some secret agenda (causing trouble or something), I just state my opinion as you stated yours. BUT acusing Dokics fan(s) for causing trouble without any valid reason (and who knows your other reasons) only shows how sterotypical is your way of thinking.
And when you mix 100 people like that in a crowd - what is that you get? Read some sociology and you might find out some day!

You honestly think people would boo her for that reason? ...for being the same nationality as Jelena, and having a similar name? Give us some credit here...

Im sorry I just find that notion completely ridiculous. jdfan, its your final comment that threw me off a little...making it out like we're all a pack of bloodthirsty mongrels when the reality is most people have forgotten Jelena and moved on.

Aloysius...sure stupid comments like that can be made from various idiots, but do you honestly expect a whole crowd of TENNIS fans to boo an innocent girl for those reasons?

If the entirety, or large proportion of the crowd got involved with treating her like that it doesnt matter the reasoning behind it...they should have been considerate shes just a kid in her grand slam debut!

Im sure tiny sections of the crowd TS couldve held something against her because shes Jelena and from Yugo, but the motivating force behind it mayb have been something like Jelena' actions?? I dont blame her if she got frustrated due to the pressures from the Cros and decided to vent....maybe the cros got some of the crowd involved too, it happens no? Maybe there were quite a few 'barbaric savages' and it was not repreentative of the typical australian crowd!

btw - there was an article on this in the paper!!

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

during the last set there was a whole sectionscreaming 'GO JELENA' Everytime she won a point they would cheer for her....she even recognised this by glancing over to them after winning some key points.....
