Venus v Ansley

Venus struggled a bit in her opening round match, whereas Ansley won fairly easily. Who will win the second round?

Exclamation

Yes, Venus was rusty and I thought she could have lost, but when she turned the first set around, I knew that she was going to win. Ansley was playing a woman who tore her ACL at the AO a year ago so it isn't surprising that she won easily. Having said that, if Venus can play the match they way she played the second set of her first round match, she will be in the thrid round without any problem.

Torn ACL?? sounds rough...anyway I agree Venus is working her way into form and should beat Ansley in straights.

Funny, i just got finished watching VEnus and Cargill's match from i think a year ago at teh australian open. All i have to say is "poor ansley". This is the type of player that Venus couldliterally beat on one leg and one hand tied behind her back. Unless ansley has grown a few inches and gain a lil weight and moves faster , she has very little chance against Venus unless Venus falls down adn injures herself. Venus just made her hit enough balls to tire her out and then moved her and then put the balls away. it was an effortless victory. its the kind of match that Venus may practice her angles and serve/volley and practice her approach shots or practice her volley. Venus in 2 half sets.

although i believe Vee will win, those kinds of opponents worry me because Venus tends to lose concentration and start spraying the ball

Venus playing herself back into form so she should be playing better in this round than last....easy two set victory for Vee.

Venus practice your second serve. Venus practice your serve volley game and net shots. Nail those volleys. Venus if you must take a nap for a few games and work out your mental strategy then come back and finish her off. Or if your thirsty leave in the middle of a game and get yourself a cold frosty glass of gator aide. Then comeback and finish her off. Perhaps you could pop out your cell phone during a rally and call home to poppa for some advice?

Venus said she'll be at 150% in the second round, and lets take her word

I think you guys are oputting Ansley down. I'm not saying she will beat Venus, I'm just saying she's a different player from last year. She started last year at 200+ and started this year at 122. i think it's a good improvement. I just hope she gives herself a credible showing.

You cannot (and will not) beat Venus by hitting medium-paced shots down the middle of the court and waiting for her to miss. That's the reason Ansley wins her match. When she plays a top player or a challenger player on a good day, Ansley's only option is to be a gracious loser. She's the kind of player that can drive you nuts on a slow clay court and if you have a bad temper, but these are fast hard courts and venus won't wilt.

Venus 6-2 6-2-still working off the rust, but she'll be in better form today.

I know there is depth in women's tennis, but not to the point of worrying about a #118 when it comes to Venus. I hope both ladies will have fun on the court and will come out with no injury and a score like 61-61 Venus. Remember Vee doesn't like to bagel up-comers.

Billie J. King has always said, that these are the kind of matches that a player should use to work on areas in their game.

Venus should really go for her 2nd serves... serve/volley, work on the down the line forehand.
