Can anyone description of Tathiana Garbin's games? Rachel McQuillan can beat her?

Molik - Should win, possibly 3 sets
Dellacqua - Might grab a set
Szili - Lose in straight sets
Dominikovic - Win in 3
Stosur - Lose in 3
Pratt - Win in 2
McQuillan - Very close, Garbin might just edge it.

I've only seen Garbin play once, when she beat Osterloh in the Eastbourne Plate (consolation competition). Hard to comment on her much from that.

I think Molik's current form should carry her thru. Pratt is playing a weaker opponent so hope she also gets thru easily. Dominikovic has a good chance if she can get her head around it and not do the big choke like she did last week. McQuillan also has a chance if she brings her A game to the table.

Stosur probably has the worst draw for the first round and doubt if she will win a set. Don't rate Szilli and Dellacqua's chances very highly.

Would be nice to see the Aussies spring some surprises and at least a couple of them get thru to the 3rd round.

Molik will win her first match but she has a very tough match after against Davenport so she'll win a round but will lose after...

Alicia - Should beat Iroda, as Iroda is in horrible form and is carrying an injury...however, Alicia's run will come to a respectable end to Lindsay.

Nicole - I expect a routine win over Mashona, and a possible upset over Farina-Elia in round 2. Paola Suarez is the seed in round 3, so a 4th round for Nicole is cerainly not out of the question.

Evie - A tough match for her against Rittner who plays well here, but certainly winnable. If it is going to be as hot as they say tomorrow, Evie may have the advantage cos she's had months of solid matches in very hot weather. I might just give her the edge here, and if she wins she has a realistic chance of making the 3rd round, possibly even the 4th (remember I said 'possibly', not a cert by any means).

Samantha - Conchi's spins and loopy shots will frustrate Sam who loves pace. I have a feeling Conchi will wrap it up in two. Sam will give a good match but she wont win. This should have been put on a showcourt.

Adriana - Not enough experience at this level to trouble or beat Clarisa. Will get off to a good start and give a good account fo herself, but she will lose in straight.

Casey - Battle of the lefty's against Maja, and this could go to 3 as Casey is playing pretty good tennis at the moment. Experience will tell, and Maja will get through but if I had to pick out of the 3 young ones, I'd go for Casey for the upset as she has the best draw.

Rachel - Garbin is in good form, and plays a good all court game. Rachel is super fit and will be very motivated for this, but I dont think she'll get through, especially if last weeks straight sets loss to Pennetta is any indication. Garbin in 3.

Conchita Martinez got beaten by Olga, I think Stosur has a chance, its not like Conchita is gonna blow her off the court.

Molik and Pratt should win in str8.

Dellacqua vs Maja will be interesting and could go either way as Maja wont like the heat, dont know if dellacqua has the fitness though if it goes to a third.

Szili is playing a claycourter that hates hardcourts, have to give her a slight chance, as with McQuillan against Garbin, If Grahame can push her to 3 playing average McQuillan can too!

Evie vs Rittner is a tough ask for Evie, Rittner had a solid year, 3rd here last year, will be a test for Evie but heat works in Evie's favour

A good draw for all the aussies really!

Well don't know how the rest of you are feeling, but I am sitting here with a smile on my face. Can't remember the last time that the Australian women did so well.

Glad to see that Nicole fought back and took the second set when things were looking down for her for a while.

Evie managed to avoid the choke after losing the second set and came thru in 3.

Stosur would without doubt be the match of the day for the Oz crowd. Looking at her stats she played a good game and she shows she has it mentally to pull it back after losing the first. Hope she manages to win a couple of more.

Rachel lost by a narrow margin. I wonder if she is coming to the end of her tennis career as last year was a shocker and I wonder if she is actually making any money once her costs are deducted.

All I need to make my day complete is for Alicia to win and give us 4 girls thru to the next round.

Very happy that Evie turned it around after losing leads in Sydney last week, and seemed to be on the same track..

nicole fought well againsty some good all court play by mashona

alicia up a break now 3-2 vs iroda!

but the win of the day i agree is SAM STOSUR in beating a slam champ. so happy for her and this will hopefully give her momentum and confidence for the whole year....btw i saw conchi lose to olga at sydney and her game looks good still

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

Can anyone let me know how close Nicole was to going into a 3rd set. I left work with her 6-1 1-2. Apparently she was down a set point??? Thanks!

Great stuff Sam, Evie...

There's more to life than just being happy.

Can't recall exactly what the situation was in the Nicole match though I think at one stage she was down in the tiebreak 5-3 so she did well to pull it back.

Bad luck for Alicia. Hope the injury isn't too serious and she is back to her recent form on her return.

So what is everyone expecting for round 2? I think Pratt has a chance as does Stosur. I am more worried about Evie after reading the match reports from those who were there. Sounds like a bit of luck may have fallen her way which helped her thru. I know luck can make or break a match, but I prefer if a player doesn't have to rely on that to clinch the deal.

Maybe we may get a pleasant surprise and the other 2 girls will get thru today.
