ok thanks! I knew about Hingis but when it came to Mauresmo I thought she had withdrawn but there's a thread "ALLEZ AMELIE (whether she plays or not)" where everyone is acting as if she's playing, so I wasn't sure anymore.

Hingis, who had earlier signaled her hope that she would be recovered in time for January by submitting an entry for the event, has now notified organisers via the WTA that she does not feel she will be recovered in time to compete.

This moves Maria Sanchez Lorenzo into the main draw.
Cool, I didn't know that she got into the main draw!

Amelie and Hingis? Yep, they're meeting in the finals

(selesrules, you need to take a closer look at that thread)

I think the men's side has taken an even bigger beating in terms of who won't be there.

Reason is poor propaganda when opposed by the yammering, unceasing lies of shrewd and evil and self-serving men.

The question now is whether Nathalie Dechy will withdraw, after pulling out of Canberra. This report indicates the answer is still uncertain.

Apparently Ashley Harkleroad is the next MD entry if anyone does withdraw.

"Dechy in doubt for Australian Open
| 7sport.com.au ... 07 January 2003 07:01pm |
Australian Open seed Nathalie Dechy could be a late withdrawal from next week's tennis grand slam if she fails to recover from a thigh injury which has forced her out of the Canberra Women's Classic.

The Canberra top seed and world's newest women's champion retired from her first round encounter with unseeded German Marlene Weingartner when she was trailing 0-5 in the first set.

Dechy, 23, from France, will spend the next few days in Canberra receiving up to three physiotherapy sessions a day in an effort to be fit for the Open and avoid sacrificing her first top 16 seeding at a major event.

But if she continues to experience pain from her strained quadricep, Dechy said she would withdraw from the Australian Open.

"If it's still painful I won't play another tournament," she said.

"But I really think and hope it will be better to start on Monday.

"The good thing is I've played enough matches to be confident and be ready for the grand slam. I don't need to go out and practice 10 hours a day.

"I know my condition is good, I just have to get my leg better."

Dechy moved up the world rankings to No. 19 overnight after claiming her first WTA title on Saturday at the Uncle Tobys Hardcourts on the Gold Coast with a three-set win over Swiss teenager Marie-Gaianeh Mikaelian.

But her dream start to the year faltered when her leg injury, which she carried through the Gold Coast event and struggled with last season, returned with a vengeance - something she partly attributed to Australia's hard surfaces.

To avoid further aggravation before the Open, Dechy decided to pull out of the Canberra event and concentrate on her recovery.

"I could not do anything for the match and it could get really worse and I still want to have my chance in Melbourne so it's better to stop here," she said.

With fellow Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo, Martina Hingis of Switzerland former Australian Jelena Dokic absent from the Australian Open, Dechy will move into the 16th seed position, when they are announced on Wednesday."
