Clay Court season 2019: Madrid, Rome, Paris

According to the Clay Court Power Rankings, nowadays Simona is the best clay court player with a margin. What is more, several of her main clay competitors are struggling with different problems, therefore, Simona should focus very much on this season, which has been one of the key ingredients of her achieved No.1 rankings.

The current CCPR is as follows, taking into account ONLY the clay tournaments that are held in the clay season:

Halep............7209
Muguruza.........4072 - in questionable form
Svitolina........3518 - health issues +honey moon?
Bertens..........3246 - somewhat regressed form, STILL A SERIOUS COMPETITOR!
Serena...........3213 - unknown form, injuries
Ostapenko........2913 - somewhat regressed form
KaPliskova.......2609 - IN GOOD and PROGRESSING FORM!
Stosur...........2467 - close to stop
Kvitova..........2394 - not the best on clay, and should focus on grass and HC
Stephens.........2270 - PROVED to be GOOD ON CLAY!
Bacsinszky.......2223 - unknown form, injuries, close to stop
Keys.............2155 - not the best on clay
Garcia...........2127 - not the best on clay
Sharapova........2072 - unknown form, injuries, her ranking is underestimated because she was away in 2016
Mladenovic.......1971 - in questionable form, but occasionally she can play very well on clay!

Note:
The CCPR is calculated as follows:
100% of the clay court points from the CURRENT year
100% of the clay court points from the PREVIOUS year
75% of the clay court points from the YEAR BEFORE THE PREVIOUS
50% of the clay court points from 3 years earlier

The CCPR values high the consistently good clay court performance.

==============================
The first stop: Stuttgart

Simona can go deep in ANY clay court tournament, but she cannot play through the whole clay season with this depth (Finals). For her physical capability Madrid, Rome and Paris is enough, Stuttgart can only be used as a warm up event. In Stuttgart Simona has to accommodate herself to the surface: adjustment to her motion and timing. The practice shows that she needs roughly 2-3 matches for this.

My extra target to check in Stuttgart is Simona's serving out strategy...

I am curious if her clay season will be affected as well since this year have had have a modest performance. I hope not, excited to see her back in her element.

Good luck at Fed cup!

So far Simona lost several important matches ONLY because of bad strategies (and preparation). This would suggest a coaching problem, even if we didn't know that she REALLY had/has some coaching problems.
And this is critical on HC, because on HC the WTA field is extremely balanced.

Fortunately, on clay Simona has a clear advantage over the rest, therefore she must be AWFUL in order to achieve a weak clay season. So, I do not afraid of this.

Unsurprising.

Coincidentally also the surface where the Garcia-Mladenovic double won Stuttgart years ago, and also where Mladenovic was able to play the match of her life maybe, making the final by beating Sharapova 2 years ago. So it's well calculated.

Calculations.... may look good on paper but in reality I do not think the surface matters all that much in this matchup, and many other factors play a role in the outcome of a match/tie. I would think the french crowd may pose a bigger threat! 😃 Really excited to see Simona back on clay again! Bring it on!!!

The biggest threat is how many warm-up matches Simona has on clay. (To the best of my knowledge, currently the counter stays at 0.)
