Mona's 2019 Season!

Not sure if we need more threads for 2019, so I just started a general thread for 2019, we still can change it...

Auckland

1st round: Gasparyan vs. Barthel

Tough 1st round against Gasparyan, who was in good shape again lately.
I don't expect her to win but maybe she can surprise us, good luck!!

Re: Mona's 2019 Season!

And it was a solid 2&6 win against Espinosa. They meet pretty often recently.
Intriguing next round with Goerges who's become a different person out of the deep blue.

Nice start for Mona, lucky to play SSE here instead of Gasparyan but still a convincing scoreline, good stats in general!

Görges next, I hope for a good match from both there!

Re: Mona's 2019 Season!

Mona actually played reasonably, made a match of it, but it always looked like she was going to come out the losing side. Julia beat her 4 and 4.

In the second set towards the end, Mona had Julia under pressure in a service game, and almost broke her, but ultimately Julia escaped and then the rest went Julia's way.

HOBART

(8) Alison Van Uytvanck v Mona Barthel
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova v Evgeniya Rodina
Wang Yafan v Irina-Camelia Begu
Qualifier v (3) Zhang Shuai

Mona appeared as 1st seed in the QD already but then got moved into MD!
Draw is not too bad, van Uytvanck was not that great lately + she twisted her ankle this week in Auckland, not sure if she is at 100%, we'll see how it goes for Mona, good luck!

Re: Mona's 2019 Season!

She withdrew due to a viral illness. She seems to have a tendency to get sick on these Australia trips. Hopefully not a recurrence of the serious viral illness she had a few years ago.

Melbourne

Qualifier vs. W. Osuigwe (WC)
M. Barthel vs. A. Sevastova (13)

Tough first round against Sevastova, let´s hope that Mona is healthy again and then it could be a good and interesting match at least, good luck!!

Checked the score that reads 3 & 1, no upset here and they lived happily ever after.
There's nothing to get disappointed if you know what's sport entertainment but still it would be more enjoyable with some drama to your liking.

Re: Mona's 2019 Season!

well, I would have expected a bit more from healthy Mona but I assume that she also was not at 100%, it would be a good excuse at least as the stats are quite bad, match was quite close until 3-3 after that it was pretty easy for Sevastova, not even 40% won over 1st serve in 2nd set for Mona, made it too easy for Sevastova.

Don't know what's going on but she barely beat Ferro to prepare for a tough 2nd round anyway.

It's all about speculation since Mona being quiet on social medias about her stuff for a pretty long time.
Regarding her tennis career I guess she has arrived in a kind of tourist mode.
After all who could blame her for mainly travelling the world and having fun as long as it financially works ?

I still wonder a bit why none of the coaches she had in her career was able to do something with her forehand. Obviously a lot of different other also personal stuff involved in successfully coaching somebody. Anyway, it certainly could have helped her to give her orientation and develop a less schizophrenic game style.

I'm almost sure everyone who's attracted to her around 2011-2012 saw the bumpy path and I felt it was more like concern from the beginning than just normal support other players might get and I still wonder why I also had that grand expectation with only a little glimpse, not real results that didn't follow after all.
First I want to consider before everything is whether this sport is just fair and normally random or not, but I wouldn't have a clue and even so, I'm guessing she could have been a fixture at the mid-top despite being a non contender.
And it's proven to be a right observation here about her being too stubborn as well then who else could do anything about it? Yes she can travel and I'm never a right person to say about someone's career. ha.

Re: Mona's 2019 Season!

lost 36 57 to Muguruza after wasting a 4-0 lead in 2nd set!
2nd round was the expected result for here, so no disappointment, Fed Cup next, maybe it helps her

More often than not, after 3-0 the away winner let the host take the doubles but Belarus has no mercy as they look like.
