2018 Grass Season!

1st tournament of the short grass season is Nottingham!

1st round: Mona BARTHEL def. [Q] Katie SWAN (GBR) 7-6(5) 7-5

Good start for Mona, it was "only" Swan here but 40/42 pts won over 1st serve (95%) is still an impressive number, 10 aces also.

Rybarikova next now, pretty tough on grass, don´t expect a win there but I hope for a decent scoreline/match at least!

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

Needed win. Think she was attacking the net (awkwardly) more often. The coach guy was a doubles player so once I expected an improved front game but it didn't happen maybe because she had no room for that.
Still doesn't look comfortable on grass but who's not except a chosen few?

Encouraging match for both players. Katie didn't look out of place against a competent WTA professional and Mona looked like a competent WTA professional! Chances to win sooner came and went as per normal but all in all good showing for Mona. Suppose if you have to play Magda in grass season you would prefer to do it early. About the only positive for the next one....

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

Mona won 63 16 75 against Rybarikova.

In the third set Mona was up 5-2, had a match point at 5-4, but couldn't take it.

I saw the last two games- at 5-5 Mona was down 15-40 on her serve, that was a critical moment- if she lost that game I think she would have lost the match, that would have been 4 games in a row for Magda and all the momentum would have been with her.

However she managed to hold, and then Magda committed a number of unforced errors to lose her serve in the last game.

Her best win and performance on grass despite some really easy misses at crucial moments. Well done Mona!

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

Good win for Mona, I was able to catch the last few games only and in those Mona was pretty up and down.
I think it was visible that Mona was quite nervous, she just needs more wins again to get more confidence in those important and crucial situations.
Her service game at *53 was really bad and her 1st serve % was really bad in her last two service games also but she did not give up, the way she came back at *5-5 15-40 (after 2 DFs in a row and another UE) was crucial, some good points there and at 65* Rybarikova herself made some easy UEs to gift Mona the win...thankfully

Vekic/Lapko next, far from easy, but I am happy that Mona was able to win two matches in a row here!

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

Yes she really had one foot in the grave and this is the kind of stuff why grass rules over anything when they can play all around.
A question remains why Rybko was uber aggressive in the last game 'cause she could test her opponent's nerve once again though she had nothing to lose having saved mps.

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

Great Win for Mona.

But I have decided watching Mona in person is even more frustrating than watching on telly - you can't shout rude things like you normally would.

Well you can but you would probably be asked to asked to leave.

By the time of some of the missed sitters at the end came round the crowd were no longer bothering to hide their groans mind you!

They were willing Mona on though especially as Magda gave the impression of not being too fussed. She rarely shows much emotion anyway but often her play today was incredibly casual.

But that was good for Mona of course. Watched Donna yesterday and if she somehow gets through Lapko we could have a contest between two players who can't serve out a match. So that could go on a while.

But Mona played some really good tennis today as well - and being aggressive and coming forward just as much as Magda. This is possibly the best start she has had to grass season? Hopefully it gives her some more confidence on the surface. If only she could be a bit more consistent. If only...

Rybko always looked dead tired in person often retiring all of a sudden but it's happening to many at the term end I get the chance.
Good thing anyway the match wasn't a waster for you.

5 & 1 loss and onto a next meadow. I didn't watch but Wawrinka must have been too strong on grass.

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

I did not watch it as well but no shame to lose to Vekic on grass but a bit disappointed with the stats, her serve is just way too inconsistent, tough to win matches with winning 52% of the pts over 1st serve only.

Anyway, QF was a good start into the grass season!

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

Once I leave Nottingham Mona stops winning.

No embarrassment in this result though - Donna seemed to be playing herself into a bit of form yesterday.Hopefully these wins will give Mona a bit more confidence on the grass.

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

100k Ilkley

1st round: Barthel vs. Falconi

She should be able to beat Falconi, 2nd round would probably be against 1st seed Kanepi, which would be much tougher....

Re: 2018 Grass Season!

and then she gets bagelled by Falconi....

lost 06 67(3) and that´s just bad again after that little highlight from last week, 1 ace, 7 DFs, only 55% won over 1st serve
Wimbledon Q next, would be nice to see her in MD but she will have to improve, if she wants to have a chance.

What the hell? How does she beat Rybarikova only to get bageled by Falconi?
