Re: 2018 Clay Season

That was a good match from Mona, clay hides her weakness in the forehand side but her forehand down the line is becoming good again. Backhand great as well. Overall a great performance. Vekic next

Re: 2018 Clay Season

Clay is indeed her best surface these days often and finally a win over Sveta after close defeats to her before, hope she can get some more wins here, weŽll see...

Re: 2018 Clay Season

I think Mona has a fair shot at the title. Clay is her best surface these days

Re: 2018 Clay Season

Mertens is a good player. I wouldn't want to predict anything at this stage, but of course Mona is capable.

Re: 2018 Clay Season

Ladies Open Lugano - Quarter-final: Elise Mertens beat Mona Barthel 6-4, 5-7, 7-6

One of the worst tiebreaks you'll ever see. Honestly Mona, go see a sports psychologist. That was beyond pathetic.

Re: 2018 Mona's HC Season

Mona loses Lugano QF to second seed Mertens 4-6 7-5 6-7(0).

Couldn't find a forehand and hitting DF's galore. But didn't disappear as she sometimes does - kept fighting and hitting enough winners to make you think she night do it. Then completely lost her range at the most crucial point of the match.

I know I stan for some Russian Headcases but Mona is arguably the most frustrating player on the planet.

Re: 2018 Clay Season

She did lose the third set tie break 7-0 but at least she played well enough to get to that position. Elise has had a better last couple of seasons than Mona and I'm not surprised that she managed to perform a little better (or a lot better) at the most crucial moment of the match. Mona is showing some positive signs in her tennis though compared to what we were seeing a while ago.

Re: 2018 Clay Season

shame that she was not able to take her chances today, break ahead in 1st and 3rd set and in the end such a bad TB, would have been really important to win such a match for Mona...

Mona barthel is the biggest under achiever in tennis. Her talent has been completely wasted in her career. I have been a fan of hers since i first saw her play in stuttgart 2012 (on tv). Her game was incredible, particularly in the match against azarenka. She had amazing power, was hitting winners at ease from anywhere on the court. She could hit big as anyone but also had speed and touch pretty much every attribute needed to be number one and a grand slam champion. Not sure what happend to her maybe it's down to illness, having too much ability and not knowing what to do with it or just couldn't handle the pressure of expectation. She is a shadow of her former self. Too many coaches has just messed her power game up making her far to cautious . She's turned into a counter puncher now and has no confidence in her ability. Such a shame as she was so exciting to watch. She should take note from people like ostapenko and kvitova whose game she could re create with the addition of far better movement.
HowardH and Tecumseh like this.

Re: 2018 Clay Season

Prague

1st round: vs. Lottner (q)
2nd round vs. Buzarnescu/Haddad Maia
QF vs. Sasnovich/Kr. Pliskova/Q.Wang

Mona was supposed to play Vondrousova but she withdrew, so Lottner instead, surely the easier draw but still tricky, weŽll see which Mona appears on court tomorrow, her pushing style could be enough if Lottner turns into an UE machine as often but will be tough to defend her title obviously.
Ka.Pliskova was in her quarter also but withdrew as well, so in general she really canŽt complain but as I said, it still will be tough...good luck!
