Auckland:

Barthel (7) vs. Lepchenko

H2h 3-2 for Lepchenko. Mona won the first and last match!
Mona did not play since Beijing and has only won one match (against Jing-Jing Lu) since August but her results down under are usually good, so we´ll see how it goes, hope that she was able to improve again during the off season and that she will have a successful start into 2018.
I put this here

Hope Mona had a good off-season.

Re: 2018 Australian Summer

Seems like she did in a recent interview, aiming for top 20 this year. Lepchenko is a tough opener though

That is not an easy opener for either Mona or Lepchenko. Will be a close one to call. I feel like this year could be a good one for Mona though, hopefully she starts it well.

By the way Auckland is my hometown and it's in New Zealand, not in Australia.

So the thread should say 2018 New Zealand and Australian Summer, or something like that.

Happy New Year by the way, to everyone. It's already 2018 here, but it's 2017 still where most of you guys are.

First I was so confused reading 'summer' as things are crumbling left and right and I almost wrecked my car yesterday in this hardcore winter here, but it's actually summer down there. Stupid me.
And merry Christmas.

Re: 2018 New Zealand & Australia

lost 26 26

I was not able to follow it but scoreline looks pretty disappointing, also no break for Mona, only 53% pts won over 1st serve, that´s just not enough.
Let´s hope that she can do better in Hobart, a win before Melbourne would be really important....

Re: 2018 New Zealand & Australia

I watched the match and she was appalling. Not sure what she was doing in the off-season

She changed her service motion and by the looks of it, it's worse

She wasted the off-season it seems.

Re: 2018 New Zealand & Australia

Saw 3~4 games that she was trying to be all-aggressive. Probably not the way her simulation games went on in the off season.
Onto her favorite Hobart, hopefully it's gonna be her MONA FOMA festival again.

Re: 2018 New Zealand & Australia

I'm not really sure why Mona has changed her service action again. I don't think this change makes it better. It's not the kind of change I would recommend, it's more disjointed and less smooth. If it's because a more normal action causes her pain, that would be a legitimate excuse, but otherwise it seems like taking a step backwards.

Even in a poor showing she hit a few nice backhands and volleys, but overall she looked like she was not totally ready for matches yet- I suppose if she is just rusty she might be better with each successive tournament in the year.

Re: 2018 New Zealand & Australia

She almost had the 2nd set refusing to make Lepchenko look like nabull any more.
But more Lepchenkos should be thrown at her till she finds the right answer.
