It's really sad that none of the best Croatian players (Lucic, Konjuh, Vekic, Fett, Martic) are playing in Bol. And that qualifying was a complete joke.
TBH I fear for the future of this tournament. If they can't attract decent players, then sponsors will leave as well.
Well, this year they've managed to get the sponsorship from the Croatian Tourism Board, which is like a dream for the organisers, cause they don't have to bother much with quality that's needed to attract private sponsors.
But if that goes away, it'll be hard to keep it going without some real changes. Surface, tournament grade, or something else.
It's a shame that WTA dictates things like surface, because switching to grass, they'd be like Croatian equivalent of WTA Mallorca, and surely attract better field, especially in this calendar slot. And speaking of which, that's also somthing that's dictated by the WTA, cause you can't just move the tournament by a month here or there, as some have proposed. It'd be awesome if it were possible.
So basically what you're getting is a chance to run a claycourt event in this exact week. Take it or leave it.
And with the overlaps with so many solid ITF events, it's not easy bringing quality players.
Overall, I don't think this 125k series will be alive for much longer. It's all too complicated, mainly due to insufficient number of good calendar slots.
