Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

I know there's technically still one match to be played until the clay season is over but whatever. Grass Season is finally here. Hope Angie is healthy and fit again and show some great tennis.

Only scheduled to play Mallorca and Wimbledon though at this point.

Re: Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

Least excited I've been in ages lol. Her form has been woeful since Wimbledon last year with the exception of the Hopman Cup.

I'm not at all blaming her coaching arrangement, but maybe that does require some looking into? Idk, let's see what healthy Angie can give us on her best surface.

Re: Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

Good lord this clay court season was a hard slog. I'm glad it's over.

I'm not feeling too enthusiastic about grass though. It would be extremely tough to defend her title under normal circumstances but Angie's very short on match play and with her ankle injury it's difficult to say how she will do. I'm keeping my expectations low but hoping for the best and that she enjoys herself out there regardless of what happens.

As for Rainer, it doesn't seem like he's doing a bad job but his impact seems negligible...

Yeah, it's not as bad as 2017 and the injury was obviously very unfortunate but it kind of feels like your typical uneven year for Angie... I don't have high hopes for the rest of the season either. I wish she would catch fire again one last time in 2020 with the Olympics coming up as well but I don't know, she's going to be 32 then.

Re: Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

Clay season was so bad for Angie and most of my other faves that for the first time in a long while I paid a lot more attention to ATP Grass should be greener literally and figuratively, I suppose.

I'm pretty surprised that she chose Mallorca once again considering this was her first I-don't-care tournament last year. Maybe Angie doesn't like paying taxes

Re: Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

Good to see Angie finally playing again Feels like ages since the last time!

I know I repeat myself, but I just don't like Mallorca as a preparation for Wimbledon. Yes, I know that Angie went on to win the big trophy last year after her tank to Riske, but that doesn't change my opinion
These grass courts don't play like the English grass courts at all and the worst thing is the lack of hawkeye Grass court tennis without any options to challenge is not acceptable anymore! You just know right now already that Angie will be very pissed about this at some point...
Positive things are certainly the low probability of rain compared to Birmingham (it's getting hot on Mallorca next week!!!) and the mostly German crowds.

Anyways, draw is ok, Q opponent to start and Kuzmova or washed-up Pova in R2 is not that tough even at an International tbh. Angie shouldn't lose to Pova outside of clay in 2019! Don't you dare, Angie!!! Draw looks certainly tougher from the QF though.

I still believe that this coaching arrangement is not working. I'm not even talking about the fact that Angie hasn't played well this year apart from Hopman Cup and IW/Monterrey. Some of his OCC advices are really bad and he doesn't seem to have a clue about women's tennis. The biggest problem though is that he just seems so apathetic most of the time. I don't think that he has some serious ambitions to achieve something big with Angie. He wasn't even practicing with Angie in Paris the days before RG, because he was tournament director for the ATP tournament in Geneva I mean, WTF is this???

Until a few weeks ago, I had some hopes that Angie might hire Sascha Bajin soon, because he meets her relevant criteria very well. Unfortunately, he got so annoying recently that I'm not sure I still want this to happen anymore

Re: Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

I had been wondering where Angie practice pics from Mallorca were, seeing practice pics from Mallorca Twitter of Vika, Sharapova, come to find out, she's at Caro's wedding. Well that explains it. Lol. I just hope her foot is healed.

^ And I agree, feels like we barely get to see Angie play anymore

I don't even think it matters anymore these days. No player seems to give a shit about warm-ups anymore. Conditions are different, that's true, but maybe not that much different. And there's still one week after Mallorca to play or practice in the UK. I'm definitely glad we won't have to endure a Nottingham-like week here.

Regarding the draw: Angie in a good form should come through this but I have no clue where Angie currently is. Is she finally healthy again? How's her confidence? What's her attitude going to be like? Kuzmova, Sharapova etc are certainly dangerous players who can beat her if she doesn't take this serious enough. Agree that a loss against Sharapova would be devastating though Maybe a match like that could fire her up a bit

Just win against Masha and I'm happy cause Her fans will be so insufferable if she loses.

Her form may be a question mark but it's Sharapova, I barely remember the last time she played.

Anyway, I also don't have great expectations for the rest of the year. 2020 though who knows, just look at how the draw fell apart this RG. This may motivates her.

Re: Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

7-5 4-6 6-2 vs Bonaventure

That wasn't really pretty. Was kind of mirroring her match against Riske last year with that close first set and then just blowing some leads and getting sloppy. Was a break down in the third but regrouped a bit and Bonaventure collapsed massively in the end with plenty of DFs.

Angie's serve was the usual mess, most of her returns way too short. Some nice FHs here and there but overall not that great. In her defense, there were more bad bounces than good bounces and the court was in a very questionable state.

Not very excited for her match against Sharapova now Maybe she's more focused there

Re: Angie's 2019 - June & July - Grass Season

The less said about this match, the better Looked like this was Angie's first time ever playing on grass. Her serve was a mess, she was way too passive and didn't move well either. She showed some resistance in the third set after being a break down at least, but Bonaventure made it very easy of course.
This "grass" court was as disgusting as I expected though. Bad ball bounces every other point Confirmed again why I don't like this tournament. I guess the cheap (or free?) hotel stays and free practice courts provided by Uncle Toni throughout the year are worth it for Angie...

Anyways, Angie could really lose against Pova playing like this I hope she got enough match practice today after the long break and she gets her game together on Thursday!

Those courts in Mallorca are just very weird. It feels slower than clay.

Nothing like Wimbledon, so we'll see.

I think she has her own house there, right? Think I've read this somewhere. I think this is some kind of practice+vacation combination for her + appearance fee. I don't know. It's a strange court for sure.
