Martina declares, "This is the best I have felt at the end of the year for a long time." She had a right to her confidence, beating Evert for the third consecutive time since Wimbledon. The 75 minute final vs Evert wasn't as close as it looked, with Martina having game points in the first 9 games. The ex-Czech also seized 12 of the last 14 points. Bad line calls affected both women, who at times agreed to replay points only to be nixed by the umpire.

Her toughest match of the week came vs the "Old Lady" in the previous round. Billie Jean got a jewel case and cake by the sponsors on her 36th birthday. What she really wanted though was to beat Martina in the semis.

Martina won a tight first set, then won only 7 points as she swallowed a bagel. Then the momentum swung again. With Martina up 5-3 Billie Jean saved a match point and roared forward to a lead of her own at 6-5 30-15. When Navratiova won the tiebreak she felt relief more than anything else. "Billie Jean is the only player I hadn't got a clean record against this year. It was 1-1 between us and that's why i wanted to win so badly to beat her."

Coles survived 3 qualy matches just to reach the main draw, then found herself in the quarters. Glynis came to Brighton with just two tennis dress and 10 quid, and found herself making multiple trips to the local laundrette as she progressed through the draw.

The 2R Ruzici-Jausovec tussle lasted 3 hours.

As if presaging her loss advance, Evert had conceded the #1 spot after winning her first round match.
Chris confessed that, "I know I am not going to be world #1 at the end of this year. Martina will get that. So whatever I do this week won't change that position. I am going to lose the #1 spot for the first time in years. I have to be single-minded to be #1 again, and I want to be #1."

In a funny twist Evert, not known for her serve, helped out Martina earlier in the week by spotting a hitch in the lefty's serve. "I have been trying to sort it out, but now that Chrissy has spotted the trouble it's fine", Martina said. As the year winds down things seem fine indeed for Miss Navratilova.

With 6 of the top ten present, an unseeded Hana wins her first big event. She is only 17, barely of age to drive the big shiny Toyota that is one of her prizes.

The final had an incident over a line call. At 3-5 down Wendy had a break point on Hana's serve at 30-40. A Mandlikova volley looked well long, but no out call came. Turnbull was never the same afterwards and went down tamely in a 65 minute final.

Hana of her dream run: "Today I won my biggest tournament against the best player I could have played in the final. I'm very happy."

The top two seeds went out early. Goolagong was done in by flu. She was on antibiotics before and during the event. After her first round match she was so eager to get off court she uncharacteristically refused to do an on court interview. Evonne defaulted right before her next match despite the fact her family had driven 400 miles to see her.

King, searching for a spot at the Colgate Championships, went out in the quarters vs Ruzici. Billie Jean blew a set point in the tirebreak and never won another game.

Good crowds all week, with 8,000 for Goolagong's first match.

Top seed Goolagong withdrew due to flue before the tournament; leaving a huge hole at the top of the draw.

With upsets clearing the way, Sue Barker wins over teen newcomer Ros Fairbank. it was a battle of big forehands, with Barker having the bigger guns. Ros had to qualify just to reach the main draw. This win helps Barker claim the #10 spot on the year-end rankings. Barker said: "This is the best I have played in two years. I really wanted to win this one. I was hungry. I'm convinced I can break back into the top 5 in the next 12 months."

Billie Jean King's quest to qualify for the Colgate Series Championships ends at the hands of Bettyann Stuart's fast serve, clocked at 170 kph in searing heat of over 100 degrees. Speaking of heat, Stuart's attractive face and halter top dress make her a photographer's delight.

Fairbank is the real story of the week. Starting out ranked 106 in the world, this attacking South African was staying in a $7 dollar a night YMCA in Sydney. Ros won 4 of 5 events and 22 of 23 matches on the aussie satellite cicuit leading up to here. In Sydner she captured 7 straight matches (3 in qualifying) before falling to Barker in the final.

6,000 see the finals.

Note on seeding:

Source for draw was the WTA site, but note I have altered the doubles seeding for the following reasons: (A) There can't have been 8 seeded doubles teams, (B) draw placement. The WTA site doubles draw has #2 seeds vs #3 seeds in the QF-impossible. Thus I have taken the #1 and #2 seeds as given and guessed at the #3 and #4 seeds based on draw position and seeds in other events.

I have listed the singles seeds as given by the WTA, but note (Per Chaton)
"The seedings are definetly not possible as given by WTA. Bunge is given as #3 seed, but would meet #2 seed Ruzici in QF in the draw. Gregory as #6 seed would have met #2 Ruzici in the 2nd round if she wouldn't have lost her first match."

(per Rollo) "the more likely #6 is Walsh, but this does not solve the Bunge mess."

Unlike the event in Sydney a couple weeks earlier this event was not part of the Colgate series. a combined event with the men, total prize money (both men and women) is $150,000 US.

Top seed Barker is put out by a leg injury and Mandlikova's sterling play. Sue saved six match points before falling on mp #7 in the match of the tournament.Barker had a set point herself at 6-5 in the tiebreak.

The finalists were extremely young, Bunge is 16 and 6 months and Hana 17 and 10 months. The Czechs win makes the the youngest NSW Champ ever, breaking the previous record by Mo Connolly. This is Hana's 3rd tournament win in 4 weeks in Australia-making her one of the favorites to win the Australian Open.

Draw courtesy of John Dolan's book Women's Tennis: The Ultimate Guide

Draw notes: Lucky losers replace #2 Ruzici (Whytcross), #4 Shriver (replaced by Harrison) and #5 Stuart (replaced by Perry).

Re: 1979 results

December ???? Manly Seaside Championships Sydney, AUS (Grass)
Won by Chesterton

-----
[From an AP wire story]

The arrival of Martina Navratilova's family on Decembver 20th is "the best Christmas present I could ask for" for the world #1. Since defecting in 1975 Martina had not both her parents and sister in person. Now the family is reunited and will be staying with her at her home in Dallas on a 1 year tourist visa. Earlier in the year her grandmother had been allowed to visit, and her motgher was present for her triumph at Wimbledon. Martina's father was her first coach. After winning Wimbledon again last summer his first comment to her was not "Good win", but "Your backhand is still rotten."

Martinas recalled how, "When I was 8 or 9 and not really good for my age he [her father] said I wouild win Wimbledon some day. They all laughed at him. He thinks my sister Jana can do it too. Maybe some day there will be a Navratilova vs Navratilova final at Wimbledon."

Summary:

For the first time in 18 years the top two seeds in the women’s draw at the Australian Open were overseas players. Neither top-seeded Virginia Ruzici of Romania, nor No.2-seeded Czechoslovakian Hana Mandlikova, lived up to their top billings, the former failing in the first round, the latter in the third round to No.5 seed Barbara Jordan of the USA. Hana was hindered by a number of footfaults in her losing QF.

In the end it was Jordan and fellow American Sharon Walsh who made it through to the final, Jordan’s 6-3 6-3 victory making her the first international woman to win the title since Virginia Wade in 1972.

Final
Billie Jean King/Martina Navratilova d Rosie Casals/Chris Evert-Lloyd 6-4 6-3

The event was beset with numerous issues. Most matches were utterly one-sided, especially for an event feauturing all top-tenners. Of 11 matches played only 1 went to 3 sets.Other problems were defaults by Reid and Goolagong, a major snow storm, and a convoluted format.

Navratilova ploughed throw the field and cemented her first consensus #1 year end ranking with a dominant performance. Only 13 games went againt her in 4 matches. Her play was so close to perfection in the final that she drew gasps of amazement from the crowd. Even half-volleys off her shoelaces dropped over for winners. Afterwards Tracy confessed that "Martina's never played better."

Lannsdorp, Austin's coach: "She [Martina] played devastating."

Navratilova. "I hope this puts aside all doubts as to who is the #1 player." It certainly did. Tracy had high hopes coming in, winning her previosu 4 matches vs Martina. In 48 minutes all her dreams of ending #1 went up in smoke.

The confusing double elimination format led to Tracy Austin playing Chris Evert twice. First Tracy drubbed Chris in the Round Robin before 9,100. Austin played the villain, ignoring the crowds cheers for Evert.

After gaining the semis in a playoff match opponents were determined by a coin flip. Evert won her playoff and drew Tracy again for what some writers dub a "looking glass" match. Austin said she had a "premonition" she would face Evert again. Did tell you you would win?, reporters asked. "I don't have those kind of preminitions" she shot back with a smile.

9,800 came for the semis despite a huge snowstorm delaying matches until 3 PM. Chris stayed with Tracy until 3-3. "That stupid forehand", Chris muttered when she sent a forhand long for 3-3. She never got another game. Even shouts of "Wake up!" and "THAT's the Chris Evert I know" from fans couldn't reverse the tide. Evert: "she just got better and better." Austin: "Maybe people will believe I can beat her now." Tracy was also peeved by the USTA ranking Chris above her at #2 in the national rankings. "In the public's mind, Chris is still #1. I guess I'll have to keep doing this [beating her] over and over again."

Navratilova on Austin: "Tracy was never sweet, not even when she was 14." "She was always tough."

Evonne Goolagong withdrew due to badly spained finger. She stumbled and fell on her hand vs Navratilova in the third game of 6-3 6-2 defeat. Evonne played on wearing bandages as blood seeped out her finger. X-Rays after the match indicated no bones were broken, but her hand was scratched up on the carpet. Parrafin treatments were tried, but when it came time to face Turnbull for a place in the semis she could not grip the racquet

Kerry Reid qualifies for the series champs and retires expecting her first child. Kerry has been a fixture in women’s tennis since she defeated Billie Jean King as a teenager in the ’66 US Championships.

Finals drew 9,200 (best attendance for semis at 9,800)
Total attendance=50,122
