Re: 1905 results

Some more results from the 1905 Pacific Coast Championships as well as the correct dates:

September 2-9, Pacific Coast Championshps, San Rafael, California, USA (Hard)

SF: Florence Sutton d. Ethel Ratcliffe 6-2, 6-0
SF: Violet Sutton d. Eleanor Peralta 6-1, 6-2
--

ACF: Florence Sutton d. Violet Sutton 6-4, 6-3
--

CR: May Sutton (holder) d. Florence Sutton 6-1, 6-0*

* From the "San Francisco Call", September 10, 1905: "Miss May Sutton, despite blistered feet and travel tire, played a more wonderful game than ever, and her clever sister had all she could to win one game in two sets. Miss Florence played her usual steady game, but May had speed, accuracy and direction. Her backhand has improved and her forehand drive, which is her main reliance, was speedier than ever. Many of the games were close and the match was interesting from start to finish."

DF: Ethel Bruce/Violet Sutton d. Vera Crocker/Ida Mearns 6-0, 6-2
--

XDF: Harold Braly/Florence Sutton d. Simpson Sinasbaugh/Violet Sutton 6-4, 6-4

Re: 1905 results

Hi Mark,

Thanks for those results, the Pacific Coast Championship for ladies in the 1900s surely deserves a Grand Slam status.
It is a pity the Sutton sisters played so few matches outside California, not to speak of Wimbledon. It is very difficult to assess their strength in these years compared to other players in the world.

Have a look at this:
http://news.google.com/newspapers?id...y-sutton&hl=en

It says May Sutton defeated Helen Homan in the final 6-0, 6-1. Was that the all-comers final?

Re: 1905 results

Marks results have been added-I love the newspaper reports that tend to bring the bare bones of scores alive. I had scores for the Southern Cal event, clearly not from 1905-I'll have to see where those belong.

I would imagine this is the case as the last sentence mentions a championship round. Luckily I have just obtained a book with all of the Tri-State results from the quarters on-I'll check and add those results in Note the newspaper spelled her last name as "Homan" in error-it's Homans.

I have added a link to Mark's original results for 1905. Tonight I will add in complete results for Wimbledon and the US Nationals.

Re: 1905 results

Added in more results for the 1905 US Nationals, specifically more doubles and mixed results. Also added in results from QF forward and correct dates-venue for the Tri-State event.

Commenting on this match, Molla Bjurstedt Mallory said, "Mrs. Bundy (Miss May Sutton) is a hard and accurate driver; it was her driving that brought her the English championship, although she plays extremely well overhead when such play is needed. She drove so well that some of the English women thought they could break up her game if only they could dislodge her from the command of the drive. In the championship singles of 1905 Mrs. Larcombe (then Miss E. W. Thompson) planned to win from Miss Sutton with a volley game. She lured Miss Sutton to the net by a short, drop drive and then lobbed the return high to the base line; this gave her the chance to reach the net, where she caught Miss Sutton's return of the lob with a sharp cross-court volley for the ace. Miss Thompson won five out of the first seven games by these tactics, but she ran herself off her feet in the winning; she became feebler and feebler, while Miss Sutton was as fresh and strong as at the beginning. Having worn herself out, Miss Thompson lost all control and Miss Sutton ran out that set and then took the second set and the match without the least trouble. Possibly Miss Thompson might have won had she been able to keep up her starting pace but she went the way of all women volleyers. I am fairly certain that, some day, a girl will burst out with the ability to play the fast game through the course of two tournament sets; that girl will be, beyond question, a champion. But there is no sight of her as yet." Tennis for Women, by Molla Bjurstedt and Samuel Crowther, Doubleday Page & Company, 1916.
