Part of vaunted "Triple Crown" (with Wimbledon and the US Open), the Slims title finally got a first class arena to add to the prestiege of the event. Madison Square Garden attracted 39,234 people over 4 days. The entire Slims circuit attendence was 385,357-averaging 32.112 per event. This was the first time tennis returned to the Garden since the famous King-Richey match of 1968.

Rules required that the top point earners enter 7 out of 11 Slims events, knocking out #6 point earner Margaret Court, who only entered 6 tourneys. This set the stage for some controversy when organizers tried to give the last slot to Billie Jean King, who hadn't played any Slims events. It was eventually decided to that Mima Jausovec, 9th in the point standings, would get the coveted last spot. At that point Mrs King decided to play in San Antonio, even though the event was not santioned because of the entry of transexual Renee Richards.

Jerry Diamond (WTA Executive Director) : "I don't think it was a wise move on Billie's part, and I told her so on the phone. I personally think she was a little hurt that she couldn't play here, but she makes weird decisions a lot of times."

Chris Evert said she was "dissapointed" and "all the women should stick together." [Later in year Evert questioned Richard's gender with the question, "She can't have babies can she?"]

Martina Navratilova: "Billie Jean is a bad girl pouting. She made a bad decision. She's mad becasue she could not get what she wanted."

Larry King: "I think this has made her more determined than ever. I wouldn't be surprised if this inspires her to play singles at Wimbledon."

Betty Stove (WTA President): "I would have thought that Billie Jean would have been very loyal to women's tennis. I know she needs the competition, but there are other ways she could have gotten it. It was a sour thing she did."

Billie Jean: "Renee is a human being, another tennis player, and I want to beat her like anyone else."

King stressed she felt her unique role in founding the tour should enable her to take advantage of the rule allowing for a wildcard. Slims maager Ellen Merlo said, "I never told her yes. We told her she could be the wild card if she played some [Slims] tournaments. But she never played any tournaments. There definitely is a misunderstanding." The wild-card clause covered King, Evert, and Goolagong, and was meant to protect the Championships from last minute injuries.

Merlo felt it would have been unfair to bump Mima Jausovec, who entered 8 Slims events. Mrs King's offer to play Mima in an elimination playoff was rejected.

Winner Chris Evert was seen after matches paling around with actor Burt Reynolds. During much of 1977 she can be seen sporting a fancy necklace reading, "Babe", a gift from Reynolds. The first nights matches were routine except for Casals-Wade. Rosie had crowd support all the way, while Wade was put off by a howling baby. On one point Rosie hit "an incredible stop-volley that stopped Wade in her tracks in awe."

Wade supplied the drama again on night two-holding two set points against Evert at 5-4 in the second. Chris confessed to being "lucky" when she saved the second set point on a net cord.

It was Barker vs Navratilova to decide a finals spot vs Chris. Despite her losing record vs Martina Sue expressed confidence before thier match. "She plays the sort of game I like to play. I grew up practicing agianst left-handed boys." Other Barker bits: she loves Mexican food and the band Electric Light Orchestra. In fact, Sue almost decided to go to Culinary school and give up tennis in 1973.

Barker's forehand is on fire and Navartilova has a weaker than usual backhand due to a sore shoulder. At times Martina even hit her backhand two-handed! A Barker backhand passing shot that secures the vital break to win the first set 7-5.

According to the local paper (The San Antonio Light) Gladys Heldman set up sponsership of the event by comntacting John McFarlin. "Shock waves" were felt when Billie jean King anounced her entry the Saturday before the event was set to start. Billie jean was denied a wild card into the Virginia Slims Championships.King's arrival pumped a shot of energy into the tournament, prompting local officials to search for extra seating. People were literally "hanging from trees" to catch a sight of Billie Jean. There were complaints about King's "brashness, and unwillness to sign autographs", but the head pro of the club noted that every morning there were "stacks" of cards and racquet coveres that had Billie Jeans autographs on them.
The pro notes Billie Jean's total dedication to the sport and her tennis, keeping a rigid schedule of exercise, practice, match, and then press day after day. After each win the 30 something star has to pack her scarred knees in ice.King bids the event farewell with the quote, "Thank you San Antonio, you saved my life."

The final was moved indoors to a slower court due to rain. The event was so big that the local fire separtment moved seating to the new location! Billie Jean admonished the umpire for repeatedly asking the excited crowd to be quiet. "Why do you keep saying that? This is the most perfect crowd I've ever played in front of."

The WTA, led by Jerry Diamond, refuses to sanction the event as it allows the entry of Renee Richards.
This is blasted by some women at San Antonio, including Pat Bostrom. "We pay $250 just like everyone else and it seems like the WTA is only providing the top players a tournament. The WTA suggested we boycott all tounaments in which Renee Ricahrds plays but only thet gave us no other alternative this week." Pat's assertion that "the WTA is only for the top players" is a common complaint among the lower rungs of the tour.

The Hamm-Antopolis semi took 2 hrs 50 minutes. Lea served up 7 double faults. Hamm is a former star of Trinity College who lives in San Antonio.

Earlier in the week hammers were out in force, hastily preparing a telivision tower for CBS in anticipation of a King-Richards semi. Little Marcie Louie wrecked their plans by upsetting the 42 year-old. When Ricahards lost the tower came down just as quickly when, as a contruction worker put it, "Dr. Somebody lost".

Funny sidenote of the week: During the first round so many fans came to see King that bleachers were taken away from 8th seed Florenta Mihai's court to be moved to King's-during the match!

The opening of the clay court season brings out an interesting event. In the first round, Billie Jean King returns and draws her biggest American rival, Nancy Richey. Nancy owned King in the 60’s, but in recent years King has taken control of the rivalry. However, clay should tilt the favor toward Richey. Plus, King has just returned to the tour and has only played WTT for most of two years.

King had right knee surgery on November 9, 1976, and spent the first three months of 1977 rehabilitating that knee. Her fitness regimen (she used Nautilus weights to get back in shape) will start a mini-trend on tour later in the year. The match began with a first set rout by Richey. The second was a battle which nearly saw Nancy close it out. However, King’s toughness prevailed and she won the third fairly easily. It was a fitting match to end this great rivalry. From the co-#1 controversy of ’65 to the Richey comeback from 4-6 1-5 matchpoint at Madison Square Garden to the ’77 FCC, Billie Jean and Nancy made for the perfect matchup – the level headed baseline competitor against the feisty, yet majestic serve/volley queen.

Tracy Austin claims Dianne Fromholtz as her biggest scalp to date before losing to Kerry Reid, a player she would struggle against. No real surprise that Renata Tomanova would take our Virginia Wade on clay. King took out Tomanova and Reid but was massacred by Clay Queen Evert in the final.

Evert takes the event by dropping only 12 games in 5 matches-running up her clay court streak to 106.

Aussie player Karen Krantzcke (nicknamed "Krans" by tour mates) collapses and dies while running around a track just hours after her doubles win. An autopsy reveals the 30 year old had an enlarged heart. At 6 foot 1 and 170 pounds Karen was one of tallest players on tour. A bad wrist had forced her to default from Hawaian events in December, but she bnonced back after visiting a faith healer over Christmas. Krans close friend Helen Gourlay drops out of the Port Washington event to see to Karen's remains.

Karen was known for powerful shots-once reaching #7 in the world.

re: 1977 results

Week of April 11-17

April 16-17 L'EGGS World Series of Women's Tennis, Tucson, Arizona, United States (Hard)
Venue: Tuscon Racquet Club

Singles (Draw=4)

1R: Chris Evert [1] d. Virginia Wade (GB) 6-3 6-4
1R: Martina Navratilova [2] d Sue Barker (GB) 6-4 3-6 6-3

FI: Chris Evert [1] d. Navratilova [2] 6-3 7-6 (5-2*)

Martina's shoulder is still hurting from an injury in Philadelphia in late March, she runs around her backhand as much as possible to protect it. Evert takes home a cool $50,000 the largest prize ever in women's tennis. The final is nationally televised by ABC. Crowds were 5,000 for the semis and 6.100 for the final.

Martina's poor first serve percentage (49% vs 71 vs Barker in the semis) doomed her to defeat despite pulling off remarkable winners at times. The second set is close, and Evert admits she was "lucky" to escape with the second set, as a bad line goes her way to get her into the tiebreak. Martina saved a match point at 3-5 down and led the tiebreak 2-0.

In an interview before the event Virginia Wade weighed in with her view on transexual Renee Richards.

It's wrong for Renee to be on the tour," she said. "But, no, I would not object to playing her." In fact, Wade later faces Richards in the first round of Forest Hills. Wade has hired a new coach, Jerry Teeguarden, who brashly claims he has found a way Virginia can beat Chris Evert. Teeguarden started working with Wade a month ago. Jerry states that "I am dubious about anything happening right away. But by Wimbledon Virginia will have a very good chance of beating her." Teeguarden also worked with Margaret Court in the past, and makes a prediction that in the future "all top players will eventually have coaches".

*Also have score of 5-3 for tiebreak. Double check.

Richards indicates she has been accepted into the European events. Richards,"I hope to win the French Open. Only the women who haven't played or gotten to know me are objecting to me playing on the circuit." A crowd of 1,100 watched King-Richards win their first doubles match. Dave Anderson of the NYT writes about how Renee is being accepted by some of her peers. One unidentified player said, "When you spend some time with her you discover she is really a nice person. But sometimes she can be a prima donna."

Young Aussie Kym Ruddell causes a stir in her match vs #2 seed Fayter. Twice she yells "You are a cheat!" With no linespeople and an 18 year old fellow player Amanda Pryor as umpire the match gets so out of hand that 18 yea rold Amanda quits the umpire chair in tears, telling the tow, "You can do it yourself." Veteran umpire Bea Seal arrives and lectures the girls. Fayter cried, won two games to take the match, as Kym refuses to shake hands and leaves the court in tears.

A rough league...WTT Los Angeles Owner Jery Buss transferred Dianne Fromholtz to nother team despite her being engaged to his son John!

Not a single seed made the quarterfinals.

#1 Maria Bueno had a wisdom tooth extracted in Brazil the weekend before and cabled her withdrawal.

#2 Miss Spex, who was in the draw at both Surbiton and Glasgow (the same week) simply did not show up, nor did she contact the tournament. She was, by the way, seen at Queen's Club during the week.

Winnie Wooldridge won the title as a highly promising 19-year-old, Winnie Shaw, in 1966 and enjoyed a notable career in international tennis until she retired from full-time play on her marriage in late 1972. Born and bred in Glasgow but now a Surrey housewife, she lives not far from Surbiton at Epsom Downs. She still plays the occasional tournament, never failing to distinguish herself, and apart from being a keen golfer she retains an active involvement in lawn tennis as Treasurer of the BWTA and Director of the Slazenger National Club Championships.

Last autumn, at Torquay, Mrs Wooldridge won the Slazenger doubles with Ann Jones and proved herself to be still capable of winning a place in the Wightman Cup team as a doubles player. At Surbiton she proved that she could make the team as a singles player as well. Anxious to gain the results needed for direct acceptance into the Wimbledon draw, she sailed through 6 matches, all against full-time players, with consummate ease. Her neat, firm game, with drives that were well drilled to the low grass-court bounce and crisp volleys that were swept efficiently into the gaps created by her intelligent court craft, allowed only one set to be wrested from her in singles during the week. In the title match she punched the final nail into Gwen Sammel's coffin with a sizzling ace. It was a highly popular victory - the English always stay loyal to the old-'uns - and made Surbiton's week.

Draw note: Patti Fordyce [7]=the former Patti Hogan.

Summary

Notes: Transexual Renee Richards had entered, but withdrew before the draw after failing a sex-chromosome test. This had also happened at the Italian. Dr. Richards will enter the US Open later this year, as American events don't require the test.

Early favorite and former champ (in 1968) Nancy Richey lost in round three. Nancy still has good days with her hard, flat forehand, but age has taken much of the sting out of her game. That leaves Mima Jausovec as favorite, since she is the only top ten woman entered. All the other top stars are in America for World Team Tennis.

The quarterfinal between Americans janet newberry and Kathy May is so tedious that specatators file out in disgust. "When Miss Newberry finally won, there was an unusual silence as the crowd realized the nightmare had ended". The Mihai-Boshoff duel was also a baseline affair, but Florenta's net play in the third made the difference as Linky tired.

Only 6,000 fans appeared on ladies semifinals day, the one day women are given center court. Even on this day the ladies get second class treatment. The second semi between Jausovec and Newberry is moved to the grandstand when the men's doubles final runs long. Newberry, "lost her concentration to the sounds of rush hour traffic" as buses and cars made more noise than the small crowd. Janet had won in Rome, leaving Mima to exclaim afterwards that, "This was the toughest match for me, this was the final." Newberry routinely missed serves and forehands. According to Janet,"I was getting tired. I hadn't played anyone who got so many balls back".

Jausovec competed in the final using pain-killing cream and spray for her bad right knee. Many felt she would have won in straights if the umpire hadn't let Mihai serve 4 straight balls in a tiebreak! The crowd whistled loudly at a close call with Mima up 3-2 in the TB. With the stadium chanting to replay the point, the umpire let Florenta serve 4 consecutive points from that point. Mihai won the TB 7-5, but Mima stormed through the third to win her only slam and the top prize of 7,000$ US.

Regina Marsikova and Pam Teeguarden, who had never partnered each other, won the doubles. Mary Carillo and John McEnroe are the surprise mixed champions. It is the first of many slam tiltles for John and the only title of any significance for Carillo.

"The best performance by a British player was undoubtedly 16-year-old Jo Durie's 2-6 6-1 6-1 quarter-final win over Maria Bueno. The Bristol girl wasn't even born when Miss Bueno won the first of her 3 Wimbledon singles titles in 1959. "I knew she was a legend in the game, and curiously, I had been reading all I could find about her only a short while ago, never dreaming I'd be on the same court as her, never mind beating her'".

From 'Tennis Today'.

Draw Note: Andy T has Carol Bailey as Carol Baily (no "e"). Confirm one way or the other if possible.

Other matches unplayed - rain

Quarter-Finals - abandoned.

"The grass was saturated and played some funny tricks with the bounce, so it was not surprising that there had been more than a few upsets in the few matches that were played. Kathy May, the top seed, crashed in her opening match to her fellow-American Carrie Meyer, who was in turn to lose to a third player from across the Atlantic, Sharon Walsh. But it was Lesley Charles, showing a welcome return to form, who was being regarded as the likely winner when the proceedings came to a halt. She started by beating Helga Masthoff, then came Mimi Wikstedt and Ilana Kloss. The gracious Maria Bueno, having disposed of Sue Mappin, was still in the running, as were Michele Tyler, Helen Gourlay Cawley, Marise Kruger, last year's winner, Brigitte Cuypers and Cynthia Doerner."

Reid/Turnbull d. Ebbinghaus/Mastoff 2-6 6-3 6-3

Barker d. Mimmi Wikstedt 6-2 6-0, Wade d. Ingrid Bentzer 7-5 6-2
Barker/Wade d Anliot/Wikstedt 6-2 5-7 6-3

Billie Jean King d Dianne Fromholtz 6-1 2-6 6-2,Chris Evert d Kerry Reid 7-5 6-3
Reid/Turnbull (Aus) d. Casals/Evert 6-3 6-3

The big upset occurs in the semis as Australia shocks Britain. Diane takes down Barker by slicing her lefty backhand return of serve down the line to Sue's weaker backhand. Even more shocking was Reid's win over Wade. In the finals King plays a pitch perfect first set, missing only 2 first serves vs Diane. Fromholtz roared back to take the second by winning 6 games on the trot before the momentum swung back to Billie jean in the final set. Reid led 4-1 in the first set, then Evert refused to make another error and barely edged out Kerry.

**Note-the Barker "win" at Eastbourne is PROBABLY the 21 and under event-there was no regular event at Eastbourne in 1977 due to Fed Cup.

Note that Judith Erskine, who played in singles and doubles here, is now known as Judy Murray, Andy's Mum!

The event plays the tiebreaker at 8 all, leading to marathons like Julie Anthony’s 40 game win over Janet Newberry. Kristein Shaw comes very close to the win of her career taking a set off Martina and pushing her to a second tiebreaker before going down in a 75 third set. In fact, Kristien Shaw had a match point in the second set at 5-4 40-30.

Tracy Austin loses in qualifying to Mappin. The tournament review in "Tennis Today: said of Austin: '...She conquered Lesley Charles in her first venture on the Craiglockhart centre court. That was the extent of Tracy's singles progress. She was to learn a lesson on grass-court technique from the bold, strong-armed Sue Mappin, who just never let the ball bounce if she could help it'.A quality field, probably due to the fact that Eastbourne was hosting the Fed Cup this week and many players needed Wimbledon preparation.

Final

Virginia Wade [3] d. Betty Stove [7] 4-6 6-3 6-1

Virginia Wade thrills the British fans with her surprising win over Evert and her title win against Stove. Betty Stove stuns Navratilova in the quarters and dashes hopes for an all-British final with her win over Sue Barker. Until the quarters, most of the script went as planned, though Evert was pushed by young Greer Stevens in two 8-6 sets. Tracy Austin is routed in the third round by Evert in her first Wimbledon. Maria Bueno made it to the third round and pushed Billie Jean King to a 7-5 second set.
