Re: 1988 results

Week of December 28-January 3

December 28-January 3, Ariadne Women's Classic, Brisbane, Australia (Grass)
Venue: Milton Tennis Center

Prize Money=$150,000
Category 2 event

Singles (Draw=56)

QF: Pam Shriver (US) [1] d. Claudia Porwik (Ger) 6-2 6-2
QF: Claudia Kohde-Kilsch (Ger) [3] d. Manon Bollegreaf (Neth) 6-2 5-7 6-2
QF: Jana Novotna (Cz) [11] d. Sylvia Hanika (Ger) [4] 7-6 (7-1) 6-1
QF: Patty Fendick (US) d. Pascale Paradis (Fra) 3-6 6-1 6-3

SF: Shriver [1] d. Kohde-Kilsch [3] 6-4 6-0
SF: Novotna [11] d. Fendick 7-5 6-1

FI: Pam Shriver (US) [1] d. Jana Novotna (Cz) [11] 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-4)

Doubles (Draw=28)

FI: Betsy Nagelson (US)/Pam Shriver (US) [2] d. Claudia Kohde-Kilsch (Ger)/Helena Sukova (Cz) [1] 2-6 7-5 6-2

Shriver wins the last ever Brisbane title on grass. The final was tight all the way. Czech doubles specialist Jana Novotna was oh so close to taking the first set. Up 6-2 in the tiebreak, she was called on a foot fault for the first time ever. She then double faulted. 2 thunderbolt Shriver serves got the top seed to 5-6. Before Jana could serve at 6-5 play was held up when a woman fainted in the crowd from the heat. Pammy won 3 consecutive points to take the set where neither woman had dropped serve.

By contrast set two was a break-fest. Jana was broken at 5-4 and 6-5 serving for the set. The American won the tiebreak with a forehand winner up the line. Dissapointed as Novotna was, this final is a sign of her becoming a force in singles.

Claudia Kohde-Kilsch put up no fight at all after the first set in a 6-4 6-0 defeat, "looking decidedly uninterested in second set proceedings".

Re: 1988 results

Week of January 4-10

January 4-11, New South Wales Open, Sydney, Australia (Grass)
Venue: NSW Tennis Centre at White City

Prize Money= $200,000
Category 3 event

Singles (Draw=56)

QF: Pam Shriver (US) [1] d. Caterina Lindqvist (Swe) [5] 6-4 6-1
QF: Claudia Kohde-Kilsch (Ger) [3] d. Etsuko Inoue (Jap) [8] 6-2 6-3
QF: Patty Fendick (US) d. Brenda Schultze (Neth) [Q] 6-3 7-5
QF: Helena Sukova (Cz) [2] d. Hester Witvoet (Neth) [Q] 6-2 6-2

SF: Shriver [1] d. Kohde-Kilsch [3] 7-5 6-2
SF: Sukova d. Fendick 7-6 6-1

FI: Pam Shriver (US) [1] d. Helena Sukova (Cz) [2] 6-2 6-3

Doubles (Draw=28)

FI: Ann Henricksson (US)/Christiane Jolissaint (Sui) d. Claudia Kohde-Kilsch (Ger)/Helena Sukova (Cz) [1] 7-6 4-6 6-3

Pam Shriver wins for the 2nd week in a row on grass, by far her favorite surface. She also erases the bad memory of blowing 7 match points here in 1980 in a nightmare final loss to Wendy Turnbull.

Shriver produced a stream of winners in the final, overwhelming Sukova. This was despite a groin strain paining her since the quarterfinals. It was all over in 72 minutes.

Shriver: "Ever since, I've wanted my name on the Cup. I'm so glad to have finally been able to do it. This title means so much to me because of the history attached to White City."

Earlier in the event Pam was a tiebreak away from elimination, scrapping by at 6-7 7-6 6-2.

Draw note: An injured Wendy Turnbull withdrew.
