From “Pastime”, May 3, 1893: “In sunlight that was almost too glaring, the meeting at which the South African tournaments were decided took place at Port Elizabeth on April 1-3. [...] So well had Mrs Maclagan played during the tournament that her chances of gaining the cup in the ladies’ singles did not seem remote when she met the holder, Miss Mabel Grant, who for some time has had the reputation of being almost as good a player as the best gentlemen in South Africa.
“The spectators were not long left in doubt as to what would happen, for Miss Grant showed herself to be so superior at every point to her opponent that she was the easiest of winners. [...] During the tournament a fancy dress ball was given, at which lawn tennis costumes were allowed.”
The South African event was traditionally held over Easter. Other female contestants included Mrs Ethel Davies, Mrs Beatrice Paterson, and Miss Jessica Paterson
