Martina Navratilova Dominant Again-but with a German lass nipping at her heals

The serve and volley record of Martina continued to grow in 1986. At first glance she was utterly dominant, winning Wimbledon for a 7th time and the US Open for her 4th crown in New York. Her lone defeat in a major was to Chris Evert in the French final. A 2-6 6-3 6-3 victory by the American enabled her to hold onto a unique record of having won at least one slam a year for the 12th consecutive year.

Evert's win put her at #2 for the year, but it was the blonde teen Steffi Graf who injected the most excitement into the conversation of who would break up the Martina and Chris show. Blasting her forehand at will, Steffi pulled off a number of tournament victories in the spring, including a straight set win over Navratilova at the German Open. At the US Open Graf had 3 mach points vs Martina in the semis; Navratilova was both daring and lucky to escape 3 match points in what was clearly the match of the year 1-6 7-6 7-6.

Martina reasserted her dominance by winning her second Virginia Slims Championships of the year, where she rolled over Steffi easily in the final. Still, at years end there was little doubt that the German "Fraulein Forehand" was now the challenger to the crown.

The second Slims Championship for the year is explained by a major restructuring of the tour. The Australian Open, previously held last among the majors in late November/early December, will now return to its' original place in January. Thus by a trick of the calendar there was no Australian Open in 1986. The Slims tour also decided on a big but sensible change. Instead of a big championship based on a season from April to March the event would now be held as a year-end capstone to the tour. This meant that there were two Virginia Slims finals, one in March and one in November. Navratilova demonstrated her mastery of the indoor carpets by winning both. Her final victory put her at 53 consecutive match wins for the year. Sweet indeed for a lady who, like fine wine, only gets better with age.

Speaking of sweet, the emotion laden return of Martina to Czechoslovakia after more than ten years absence was special. She was persona non grata in her native land after defecting to the United states in 1985. Would the Czech public cheer or spurn her? Any doubts were cast aside early, as fans came out in droves to cheer for her. Martina even got a rapturous reception in the final against the Czechs.

Doubles (Draw=16)

Fi: Martina Navratilova/Pam Shriver [1] d. Claudia Kohde-Kilsch/Helena Sukova [2] 6-3 6-4

Martina Navratilova needed 47 minutes to dismantle Pam Casale, 6-0, 6-2, in the first round of the Virginia Slims of Washington. Navratilova: "I wasn't trying to be kind at any time. I used to do that when I was winning 5-0. All of a sudden, they get excited and come back."

"You've just seen the greatest tennis player that ever lived," Casale told the crowd after the match.

Little Susan Sloane, a slip of a girl just days past the age of 15, gets a wildcard into the DC and promptly wins her first match-then is overmatched by top seed Navratilova. Zina Garrison dodged two matches points to edge out Terry Phelps in the 2R.

In the quarterfinal round Maleeva continued to own Sukova, who was undecided about whether or not to charge the net. Pam Shriver won two tough tiebreaks vs Bonnie Gadusek as a sellout crowd of 4,900 watched. Among the crowd was fellow Republican Vice-President George Bush.

In beating Kohde-Kilsch for the 14th time in 16 attempts in the semis, Navratilova never trailed and lost her serve only once.

That service break temporarily thrust Kohde-Kilsch, the third seed, back into the match. Serving for the first set with a 5-3 lead, Navratilova held a 30-15 advantage before losing the last three points and the game. The two each held serve before Navratilova captured the set when Kohde-Kilsch, serving at 5-6, watched as two Navratilova shots zipped past her and struck the line. Frustrated, Kohde-Kilsch lost the pivotal game and opening set by hitting a forehand into the net at 15-40.

"She was just a little bit luckier than I was," said Kohde-Kilsch, the world's fifth-ranked player. "Those two passing shots hit right on the line. Then in the second set, I had a chance to break her but was unlucky and didn't."

Kohde-Kilsch was referring to the third game, a 14-point marathon in which she had four break points but failed to capitalize. Navratilova eventually won the game and the set shortly after breaking serve in the eighth game.

Like Navratilova, Shriver, of Lutherville, Md., used a formidable serve- and-volley game to win her semifinal match. Although Maleeva passed Shriver from the baseline on several occasions, the majority of Shriver's ventures to the net proved successful.

"My serve has really held up this week," said Shriver. "I'm really happy with that part of my game."

Pammy had little to be happy about in the final. Navratilova blasted six aces and lost her service only once in defeating her close friend.

Shriver won the opening point of the match when she rapped a ball that hit the net and skipped over Navratilova's racquet.

"After that point, I looked over and saw that she seemed satisfied with herself," Navratilova said. "I figured she meant business, so I told myself that I'll get down to business, too." She did too. In 66 short minutes it was all over.

Draw notes:

Somehow the WTA site has posted the WRONG draw! They have mixed up Worcester and Washington. Wikipedia has picked up the error.

Kelesi upset #2 seed Hana Mandlikova with ease. Hana is still trying to recover from injuries. "I've had inflammation in my shoulder for a long time. After the Australian Open in December I went home and did nothing for 10 days when I had my wisdom teeth out. I tried to do too much in a hurry after that and haven't had time to take care of my shoulder. I couldn't serve or smash overheads at all last week, and my game is based on the serve."

Wendy White was a singles winner for the first time in her pro career. White, 25, had waited seven years for a title, but she scrapped that timetable, too - long ago.

"It feels fantastic," said White. "I was really glad to win one."

White plays an aggressive serve and volley game. Even if she has to play from the baseline, she said, "I'll somehow find my way in to the net. I'm a high energy player; I like to move around a lot."

Chalk up title number 143 for Evert. It was all Chris all week after a promising event never really sparkled as it had in 1985, when Evert beat Navratilova to break a 13 march losing streak. This time around she dispatched a series of teenagers with consummate ease.

A stellar field started to disintegrate before the first day, as #3 Hana Mandlikova (shoulder) and then world #1 Martina Navratilova (flu) withdraw. Instead of a tournament boasting the top three players in the world and six of the top 10, it now had one of the top three and four of the top 10. To avoid a skewed draw it was remade. To add more misery, a cold spell delays night sessions-a repeat of 1985. Weather made the tournament seem like the Virginia Slims or, as other wags call it, the Brrr-ginia Slims of Florida.

#3 seed Maleeva ended teen Sabatini's event in the quarters. Maleeva looks like a sourpuss on the tennis court, at times traipsing around with an Ivan Lendl-like scowl. Another writer described her as "A brooding Bulgarian blacksmith" in comparison to Gaby, "a beautiful, enchanting gypsy with a tennis racket".

But the image is misleading. Manuela Maleeva beams an engaging smile when she's away from the court. So why don't you flash that smile on the court once in a while, Manuela?

"I never thought about it," she said, grinning. "I guess I'm really concentrating very much."

Concentration helped Maleeva outlast erratic Sabatini, a 15-year-old Argentine living on Key Biscayne. For every dazzling topspin winner Sabatini hit, she whacked two duds.

3,500 came out for the semis. Both were absolute routs. "She [Evert] barely missed the ball," groaned Maleeva. "When you play someone who hits the ball that hard and that well it becomes frustrating. You can't do anything. My biggest mistake was staying at the baseline." Of the other route: "Graf keeps you hesitating because you don`t know what she`s going to do," Gadusek said. "I was late reacting. She makes you feel slow and you look slow."

4,912, by far the largest crowd of the week, turned out for the finals.

After hitting the lines on a barrage of shots against Steffi Graf -- and receiving a couple of favorable line calls -- Chris Evert Lloyd tossed around one-liners.

Lloyd made reference to a controversial second set call. ''I want to thank the umpires,'' Lloyd said. ''They helped me out today.''

After the crowd cheered loudly in agreement, Lloyd amended her comments. ''Believe me, it equals out all week,'' she said. ''You get some good ones, and you get some bad ones.

Evert was handed an envelope supposedly containing the $40,000 winner's check for her 6-3, 6-1 victory in the final of the $250,000 Virginia Slims of Florida tennis tournament Sunday at the Sheraton Royal Biscayne on Key Biscayne. But when she opened it, she found nothing.

"The check's in the mail," Evert said. "Or it better be."

Graf, ranked sixth in the world, broke Evert's service in the first game of the second set. But Evert broke right back, winning the last point on a forehand that Graf and everyone else thought was clearly out.

Graf argued with the linesman, Chet Orrill, and "said something I don't want to repeat" to the umpire. The call seemed to disrupt her game, and she won only four more points the rest of the way, losing 11 in a row at one stretch.

Evert: "If you feel you got a bad call, you've got to block it out and just go on. If Steffi didn't block it out today, that's her problem."

Evert Lloyd said her newfound strength has come from a six-week working vacation spent in the weight room.

"I'm trying to be more of an all-court player, trying to play more aggressively," she said. "I don't want my serve to just start out a point. I want it as a weapon. I think I did that a few times today. I think I surprised her a few times with my first serve, and even once or twice with my second serve.

Re: 1986 results

week of February 3-9

The $7,500 WTA/USTA Players Challenge, a women's tournament organized the past few days, will be Monday through Saturday at the Olympus Club in Lantana.

The event was organized to give players a chance to gain match play and extra practice leading into the Lipton International Players Championships Feb. 10-23 at Boca West. The 32-player draw is considerably stronger than most satellite events and includes Eva Pfaff, Christiane Jolissaint and Fairbank, all ranked among the top 35

Alycia Moulton, Ros Fairbank, Molly Von Nostrand, Catherine Tanvier, Anne Hobbs, Elizabeth Smylie and Carina Karlsson are also entered. Any player ranked in the top 106 did not have to qualify.

The Players Challenge replaces the BMW Championships, scheduled for Marco Island, which was canceled several months ago.

Big fish Martina Navratilova and Hana Mandlikova skip the Lipton, but 46 of the top 50 show. With almost a million in prize money and a 128 draw this is the biggest event outside the slams and the Slims Championships.

In her first tournament match since surgery to remove cysts from under her arm last September, Andrea Jaeger lost to Ann Henricksson, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-2, then exited in a huff and refused to attend her post-match news conference.

Pam Shriver crashed out early to Kate Gompert.

"Everyone`s stunned," said Gompert, 23, a lefthanded former Stanford All-America, who rallied from 1-4, 15-40 in the final set to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

"I`m not. I believe I can beat anyone on a given day. All I remember was that I was losing 4-1 in the third and then all of a sudden I won."

"I`m in shock," Shriver said. "I`m wondering how I lost. I should be in here discussing how I won 6-1 in the third set.
