Miki’s Return-to-Tennis “Countdown Thread”?

Hope springs eternal, fellow Lucicians!

Or, at least, it hops a bit, if not quite springs and leaps.

It seems we have finally been blessed with an update from Mirjana herself, courtesy of one of her Facebook fan pages:

Hi everyone,
After further injuring my shoulder at the Australian Open I am forced to miss my favorite tournament Indian Wells and Miami as well.I am doing everything in my power to get back on court as soon as possible and as healthy as possible .
I thank you all for continued support.
Love,
Mirjana

It looks like she fully intends to come back—maybe with that protected ranking we’ve been pondering—late this year or early next year?

I was thinking yesterday that she could STILL play qualifying at both the French Open and Wimbledon, if healthy enough to do so.

Maybe qualifying of a few clay warm-up events? Maybe a wild card main draw opportunity at the Bol WTA 125 that ma re mentioned?

That would be so great.

Her overall tennis game/form was still Top 50-ish, even with the shoulder and nerves.

She has long gotten into that pattern, that foundation, of playing safer percentages and always moving to control the middle of the court, move forward to net a bit. (Instead of just purpose-less, scatterbrained shotmaking ALL the time.)

The game that she’s been working to tighten is still “there.”

If she plays quallies in Paris, for example, I could see her making it through and winning some rounds ... up goes the ranking.

Anyhow, if anyone hears news about an imminent return, share share share.

(And Happy Birthday to Miss Mirjana—she’s 36 today!)

How long does she have to be out in order to use a protected ranking?

Not too bad. Would her PR be her AO ranking (30s) or the post AO ranking (60s)?

Ohhhh that’s good to hear. But yeah that’s a tough decision of what to do assuming she’s ready to go by the French

Shit. If Paulin freakin’ Parmentier is winning WTA titles, MLB has got to still be keeping SOME sort of flame alive. 😳

Not sure about the PR status (30 or 68) ... only know that she can’t appear in any WTA/ITF event until 6 months after she filed the ranking petition.

End of July or early August, at earliest, depending.

Or she may not return at all, which seems to be the indication.

With either ranking she'd be able to get into GS and probably all Internationals. The higher ranking would be fair because that's what she used to get into the Middle East events she was unable to play. A fresh Mirjana could really clean up at the post USO events, where everyone else is exhausted from the long season and the courts suit her game.

I hope you're right.

I am going to the US Open and it would be awesome if she plays.

I just have this gut feeling that she is DONE, though.

Of course she’s DONE.

DUNZO.

She may use a provisional ranking to make a “farewell tour” of 8 tournaments (and make some $$$) but she won’t win crap.

Mirjana’s wad has been shot.

She’s old and burned-out. Finished. Kaput.

She was blessed that she finished her career winning a R1 match at a Slam, in OZ, but she truly should end there.

She ends with honor and grace and accomplishment.

That being said, she damned well earned her provisional ranking, due to great work and results, and if she wanted to use it for one, final “attempt,” no one deserves it more.

I’d welcome it.

But she’s toast, and we all know it.

A glimmer of hope for her, then. She earned that PR with the best results of her career, so she ought to utilize it.

Hopefully she’ll return with a refreshed hunger, healed shoulder, and the same forceful game-plan she was executing before things unraveled.

She gets 8 events with the PR, so it’ll be interesting to see how she uses them. It would be odd to come in “cold” at the US Open, without a couple of warm-up events.

Then again, the prize money is great and she can test the waters at Flushing Meadows. Everyone will be exhausted, and if she’s refreshed and focused, who knows?

Ideally, she’ll use the PR carefully and guarantee herself a MD entry into next year’s Slams, using a hopefully improved general ranking to enter what events she can elsewhere.

Daunting task ahead, no matter what. She’ll be 37 next March.

Re: Miki’s Return-to-Tennis “Countdown Thread”?

Mirjana will always be the next thing to holy, for me, but I’m frankly not so trilled about the idea of her coming back and flailing/floundering for a dozen events or so.

She’s OLD, guys. 🤭

Even her own shoulder was telling her that the “wear & tear” was a serious issue the previous year.

Even Venus is becoming creaky to the point of “please rethink things,” moreso because of her stature and legacy.

I don’t know what MLB thinks she might do, in a “protected ranking return,” that she didn’t already have opportunities to “do” a year ago.

She exceeded ALL expectations and “ended” her career with a main draw win at a Grand Slam.

I don’t know if I’d wanna fuck with that, if I were her. 😳

If she comes back and flops, it’ll sting in many ways.

Then again, there is indeed something very magical about Mirjana.

She’s not like any other woman in tennis; she is utterly her own creation and ... Croatian.

If she gave things another try, I would expect her to fight tremendously, and we all know how exciting (blood-draining) it can be when she TRIES HARD.

😩

If she’s coming back just for a final “tour” of $$$ I don’t blame her, but ... meh.

I guess it doesn’t matter because no one is discussing her and she really is “out to pasture.”

If she makes a final run, she’d better win something.

How amazing would that be?

The only player in WTA history to win the first event she ever entered as a pro and the only one to win the last she ever entered.

Sounds very much like a “Mirjana-type” storyline.

She absolutely has to come back INSANE hungry for a title, or wins, or else ... ugh.

🤭
