Austria had become the "Ostmark", the eastern part of Germany.

Draw note: ALT has Stanton d. C Bowden in the 1R, but the Bowdoin sisters played doubles together.

Betz gains possession of the gold Woodin trophy. In a lopsided final the blonde Californian hits past surprise finalist Knowles. Pauline operates almost exclusively from the baseline. "Miss Knowles forehand is her strongest stroke and ranks with the best, but it was not up to par...." and Betz whales away without fear of it.

This is Betz's first title on grass for 1941.

Brough had a set point in the semis at 5-4. Her serve was never on, and Knowles threw up several lobs until Brough's game was sapped of confidence. One round earlier Brough's serve overpowered Sarah Cooke, drawing comparisons to those of Alice Marble and Helen Wills. Louise serve and volleyed on serve and chipped and charged on returns, applying constant pressure.

Week of November 3, Exhibition, Argentina

Mary Teran d. Kay Winthrop 7-5 6-4

Kay Winthrop/Dodo Bundy d. Felissa Piedrola/Sarah Palfrey Cooke 6-3

According to an October 10, 1941, news report, Dorothy Bundy Cheney and the other touring players from the United States were scheduled to arrive in Rio de Janeiro by boat on October 23. While in South America, they were scheduled to visit Ecuador, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia, and possibly Venezuela. Results were found only from the Argentine Championships in Buenos Aires, although there were published reports that the players were competing in Chile December 3-5 and arrived in Guayaquil, Ecuador, to play a series of matches there December 22-24. Note that the players did not cancel their tour after the Pearl Harbor attacks. I wonder what mode of transportation they used to return home. (austinrunner)
