The 2018 Asia Games Winner Wang Qiang will qualify for one of six Continental Qualification places in women’s singles events at Tokyo 2020,

provided her ranking is within the Top 300 on the singles rankings of 8 June 2020, and

provided the quota for CHN has not yet been filled by four direct acceptances
.

Wang Qiang won the Asian Games 2018 singles.

Final	d. [1] Zhang Shuai (CHN)	6-3 6-2
As the Games's winner Wang received an ITF Letter of Commendation. The letter was transcribed (with uncertainty of the word "means") below by zooming Q Wang's weibo photos.

The letter told Wang that she has taken a significant step towards qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic tennis event and wish her the best of luck
in achieving the remaining qualification and eligibility requirements in order to see her in Tokyo.

Receiving the ITF letter means Wang will enter the 2020 Tokyo under the category of Continental Games qualification places (ITF places) with requirements.

Necessary requirement: a WTA singles ranking within the top 300 dated 8 June 2020.
Quota: 4 Direct Acceptance singles athletes per NOC.

With a top 300 ranking, Wang Qiang will enter the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with the Continental Games qualification quota place
i) if there are not more than 3 athletes of CHN enter by Direct Acceptance or
ii) even if Wang achieves the Direct Acceptance ranking.

Wang Qiang could not enter the Tokyo Olympics and the Continental Games qualification quota place will be passed to silver medalist, in the order, bronze medalists with better ranking etc., with top 300 ranking.
i) if Wang's ranking is lower than 300 on 8 June 2020 (the Place will be passed to silver medalist Zhang Shuai if she has not already achieved DA ranking otherwise to bronze medalists etc.) or
ii) if there are four players of CHN with higher rankings than Wang and get Direct Acceptance (the NOC quota is already full the Place will be passed to one of the bronze medalist, QuarterFinalists etc. ...) .

Istomin and Wang take big step toward Tokyo 2020

28 August 2018

Denis Istomin and Wang Qiang took a significant step towards qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Tennis Event after winning singles gold medals at the Asian Games on Saturday.

As part of new qualification criteria announced by the ITF in February, players have the chance to earn their place in the Olympic Tennis Event through success at one of the regional multi-sport games, including the 2018 Asian Games and 2019 African and Pan American Games.

Istomin, of Uzbekistan, and Wang, of China, seized that chance, with the former defeating China’s Wu Yibing in the men’s singles final in Palembang, Indonesia, last week, and Wang overcoming Zhang Shuai in the women’s singles final.

As a result of their triumph, they will qualify for one of six Continental Qualification places in each of the men’s and women’s singles events at Tokyo 2020, provided their ranking is within the Top 300 on the singles rankings of 8 June 2020, and provided the quota for that nation has not yet been filled by four direct acceptances.

Each singles draw in the tennis event at Tokyo 2020 will comprise 64 players, with a maximum of four players per nation. There will be 56 direct acceptances as at previous Games, and eight ITF places, including the six Continental Qualification places.

Updates of week no.5 ended 2019.7.14 after Wimbledon.

Zhang Shuai leads singles with 487 points and Xu Yifan 1362 points in doubles.

The fact that Wang Xinyu having 150 points in third position shows the weakness in singles. With only 12 points, Zheng Saisai should better return to play ITFs.

By the way Wang Qiang has already satisfied the minimum 300 in ranking for her Continental Qualification place. Her 185 points are sufficient to be ranked better than 300. (Refer to Yuan Yue's recent rankings 278 to 281 with 183 points)

Updates of week no.8 ended 2019.8.04 after Zheng Saisai won the San Jose singles title. Her team reached SF there too.

The weakness in singles is revealed by the fact that Wang Xin Yu is still in no. 3 position.

Race updates of week no. 34 ended 2020.03.01 after WTA Doha etc.

Were this ranking list final, there would be

8 USA (4 in excess of maximum four),
5 CZE (1 in excess) and
5 RUS (1 in excess)

singles players eligible which would exceed the maximum 4 for each NOC. In this case for 56 singles direct acceptances the cutoff is #62 (#56+4+1+1).

In addition Q Wang would qualify using the Continental Qualification quota place after achieving both a Continental Games qualification place and a Direct Acceptance ranking. Assume Rybakina is not eligible for Tokyo but it will be offset by Shvedova entering with a SR of 47. As a result if using the present points for acceptance, the cutoff would then be #63.

By prediction 905 points are sufficient for final acceptance on June 8 and there is at present already 43 players have points more than 905.
Then only about 16 spots remaining for singles competition.
