Re: Topspin vs Flat?

I use both interchangeably. I'm more of a grinder but I will take a big cut at the ball so I need to have both.

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

Neither, my balls often tend out to be sorta loopy but without substantial amount of topspin

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

I play according to my opponent mostly, but generally I like to hit topspin into the corners, so that it kicks away behind the opponent, and flat on the angles to give less time to the opponent to run it in. If someone bullies me with their top spin (which is very seldom in my league) I tend to jump and just push the ball back as deep as I can get it. My preferred shot is top spin, which is soooooo effective when it lands on the baseline and in the corners!!!

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

Flat. I hit more loopy top spin shots mostly when I'm off the baseline and there's no way to be aggressive.

I am not a very good player though

My BH is almost 100% a junkballing mess. Slice, moving between 1-and 2-handed BHs, looping, random aggression. Mess

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

I like topspin for consistent shots to the baseline, flat shots tend to fly lower and catch the net more often. I'm sure it depends on how much pace is on the incoming ball too.

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

Mainly topspin on the forehand. I like to hit a lower-bouncing flat backhand. But I've been trying to hit it with more spin in the past few months, but it's not like I do less errors since I started doing it I guess I'm still getting used to it and in the future I'll reduce the errors. But sometimes flat is much more effective to hit winners or to try to go to the net, so I still use it.

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

My forehand is the barometer of my game, if it's "on" with nice control and mix up spin and speed, i can play well, if it's "off", it can be a disaster and then i can make 482948 unfortunate errors.
My serve and backhand are rather solid, a work in progress though.
Need to improve my on-court positioning in order to make my shots more efficient in certain situations and my mental strength in difficult situations, too (not bad, but could be better).

I'm glad to read all your posts knowing that I'm not the only one with messy backhand

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

Backhand is flat but I don't need to worry about it as much as my forehand since my backhand is more accurate and reliable

I used to bash the ball as hard as I could when up until last year where I develop more a counterpuncher style. I made too many errors that were giving me a headache

I started tennis lessons a couple of weeks ago, and my new coach is trying to turn me into a top spinner on both sides.

The new grips are not going very well at the moment

You're probably hitting underneath the ball too much. Make sure to make contact with a closed racket and brush up the ball while hitting through.

Re: Topspin vs Flat?

I have recently learned the importance of putting topspin on my forehand shots to prevent hitting too many weak shots that don't make it past the server's line and prevent taking a lot of time to get my FH stroke up to par. If you simply try to push through the ball while bringing your racket head to your shoulder, you may sell yourself short.

I am sometimes able to create some substantial topspin but infrequently. I have a weird technique from FH side despite my tennis instructor correction, I blame ... table tennis for that as I used to play a lot when I was a kid. The confusing thing is that according to my coach every drive groundstroke is topspin But I played with someone who was able to create strong top spin and its very nasty and different.

My backhand on the other hand is decent, I can hit blistering shot with it.
