Re: Back on clay after 3 years: Sabine’s 2019 clay season

And she won! 7-6 (tb), 6-4

Plays (unless I've read the draw wrong) Raina later - and the usual rituals and finger crossings and touching of wood for that, but no matter how that goes, the duck is broken now.

She. Won.

Will spare you the details because it wasn't necessarily pretty.

Re: Back on clay after 3 years: Sabine’s 2019 clay season

Unsurprisingly - she's just not used to playing two singles matches back-to-back and it was always going to show; next time around may be better - she lost, 6-3, 6-1. Earlier today she won because she served well and was able to use it as a weapon; just now, though, she wasn't able to find her service rhythm. A shame, because it would have been lovely if she could have progressed here, but not really a loss worth much attention. Adds a slightly bittersweet tinge to things, but still a good day; still an important one, a massive (hard) step forward.

She served well and backed those serves up well, which is the main thing. She also held herself together well under pressure and didn't flame out when she couldn't convert the two MPs. All of which is excellent. If most return games were as scrappy as anything, well, they were as scrappy as anything; something that needs to tighten up, but not a big deal.

Obviously it was too much to ask for that to extend to the later session (the stats scream 'tired' and that's that), but now that she's played two singles matches on the same day for the first time in... I can normally remember this sort of thing but actually can't which is a tell... she'll probably be better at it next time.

The physical effort in the first match was huge though; she literally threw herself at the net a couple of times towards the end. Now that she's got this particularly nasty monkey off her back, she should be able to relax a bit when she plays (i.e. relative to what she's been like - what she's had to be like - at least), and that ought to come with a few benefits.

Re: Sabine’s 2019 grass season

Didn’t have time to start the new thread for the grass season before. Saw that there have been a few grass season posts in the clay thread..well I’m not the only one here who can start a thread right @Michael! Can you please move those posts into this thread?

Well 2 matches played today in Surbiton: finally won her first tour match this year and hopelessly lost the second one.. Oh well, at least she had her freaking first tour win in 2019. Grass season is 1 day old and it’s already more successful than the whole freaking clay season

She managed to get into the qualies of ‘s Hertogenbosch! Plays Minnen tomorrow.

Fourth match on Court One. Weather looks iffy, but we shall see. Fingers crossed, legs crossed, wood touched, all manner of rituals performed etc.

Re: Sabine’s 2019 grass season

Lost a long, tough and highly competitive match 7-6(tb), 1-6, 4-6. She played a very good first set including a good solid TB win, but it seems her longterm shoulder issue made an unwelcome appearance in the second set, after which everything became rather difficult. Was competitive again after an MTO, but without the strong service games of the first set and that made the difference. She clearly fought very, very hard to try to stay in the match in the third set.

Re: Sabine’s 2019 grass season

She played a good first set and then in no time she was 0-5 in set 2. She had a MTO for her shoulder/back...re-occuring thing unfortunately. Directly after the MTO and thereafter treatment she played better, but the treatments are not limitless. Don’t think the issue is very serious, but it clearly hampered her game today, especially her serve. From set 2 on it also became very cold...I think that definitely worsened the shoulder/back issue. And I have to give credits to Minnen who played well and especially served very well..Sabine struggled a lot with Minnen’s serve.

I did wonder about that. Conditions will presumably be better on that front in the next tournament...

You're right about the shoulder/back thing as a long-term problem. Never going to go away entirely I suspect; we have to hope she can learn ways to manage it, but that's hard.

Yeah, that was obvious from the flow of points and the stats (just off those I was pleasantly surprised when she took the first set), and highlights further the positives of the match - of which there seem to be quite a few. Of course she needs wins so this is still a blow; also there's something just desperately sad about her losing in part due to the problems that have caused the present difficult situation. But the potential for something going right soon does seem to be there? No guarantee (because there never is, and because this was also true at the start of Clay this year) but worth a hope...

Q1 Mallorca

Lisicki vs. Barthel

Interesting match!
We will see how that one goes, Mona was far from impressive lately as well, could be a typical 3 sets mess, tough to predict....
