Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

I'm glad to see her playing Brisbane instead of one of the smaller tournaments. I think 2018 could be a very good year for her. I just hope she stays healthy.

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Good luck in 2018... I'm hoping for a title, any title, even like Bol 125k or something

I'd rather she had chosen Shenzhen or Auckland. Even if Sori generally plays better on bigger stages, in the end these are all just warm-up tournaments for the aussie open and the new season, so better to have more matches than potentially a first round exit against a top10 player... the entry list is soo packed as usual...

Well, maybe she also aims an A.O seeded spot. 34 could be enough, with Kuznetsova and S. Williams in doubt.

Hobart is the 2nd week for her. Didn't make the Sydney cut -->> https://twitter.com/danielradutenis/...12316502118403

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Nice win in rd 32 over Jen Brady 7-6(3) 6-1. Sori was only broken once to open the 2nd set, and then won the next six games to win the match.

Sevastova in rd 16. Sori is 2-0 h2h, but they had a very tight match in Miami last year.

Good luck

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

After beating Brady, Sorana got crushed by Sevastova and today she also lost in Hobart 5&3 to Watson. Very frustrating loss as she came back from 0-4 in the first set, even had a SP but couldn't convert

Not the best start of the year, especially since she'll be defending quite a few points in Melbourne now

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Here's the section of the draw she will need to get through to defend those 4th round points from last year:

Safarova (29)
Tomljanovic
Cirstea
Diyas
Cabrera
Haddad-Maia
Cepeda Royg
Ka. Pliskova (6)

Not the worst draw in the world, but obviously tough. Diyas won their only meeting back in 2014 and has been playing pretty well lately. Sorana will need to be aggressive while keeping the errors down.

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Sorana def. Diyas 5-7 6-4 6-3!

Very tough match, and Sorana can thank her fitness for this victory. She grabbed control of the match in the middle of the 2nd set. She missed about 5 BPs at *2-3 before Diyas finally held, but Diyas was totally gassed after that game. Sori held easily in the next game and then got the break at *3-4. She was unable to serve out the set, but broke Diyas again to take the 2nd.

Sorana was in really good form for most of the 3rd set. She ran Diyas all over the court before finishing with a winner or forcing an error. Although she didn't get a lot of first serves in, she game up with some big aces at crucial moments.

The final game was full of drama. Sorana saved a couple BPs and finally won it on her 7th MP. Diyas was going for broke, and it seemed to be working. Sori held her nerve, though.

Well earned victory! Safarova is next.

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Good job Didn't catch the match so thanks @overrule for the summary

Safarova has been dealing with a lot of injuries so I wouldn't say she's in very good form. I do like Sori's chances here.

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Sori lost 2-6 4-6 to Safarova.

She had a couple chances to get to 5-5, but Sorana missed a return long by an inch and Lucie served an ace that barely caught the line. Lucie is a tough match up for Sori, as their games are pretty similar, but Lucie is a bit more accurate and has a better serve. Her wide serve to the ad court really troubled Sori the whole match.

Sori actually hit more winners, but 33 UEs were just too many. She was also only 1-5 on BPs, while Lucie was 4-5.

She's still in the doubles with Haddad-Maia after they won their first round match yesterday.

That group of fans were something else though... fairplay to them, she certainly didn't suffer from a lack of support today! Sang, chanted and cheered their hearts out for her.

Sori

Yeah, Sori's aussie fans are the best. They were supporting her last year as well

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Not much happening for Sori after AO... she got to R3 in Doha but only managed one win in the other 4 tournaments. Her ranking is still pretty good (actually very good compared to her playing level atm) but the clay season is coming up and she's defending quite a few points: QF Istanbul, QF Madrid, SF Nurnberg, R2 in FO

Seems more like her highlits of the last couple of months were playing Fed Cup, getting invites to the Tie Break Tens in MSG and signing with the CSM Bucharest club...

Re: Sorana's 2018 Adventure Cheering Thread

Sorana lost in Madrid R2 While she did get a solid win in R1 over Siniakova, her level is still not lookin that good... so her drop almost outside of top50 should come as no surprise.

She needs some strong results in Rome and FO so fingers crossed she has some luck with those draws.
