Notable mainly for the final, which was the first 3 out of five set women's match since the US Women's final of 1902! Navratilova's dominance of the tour led the WTA to change the format. 78,577 tripped through the gates for the wek, including a record crowd of 15,309 for the finals.

Of Andrea Jaeger it was written "So carefree and nonchalant did Miss Jaeger look that there must be serious doubt whether one so intelligent should continue with a career on tour."
