Colgate Series Championships
Landover, Maryland, 7-11 January 1981

The 1980 year actually extended into early-the year ending championships coming after the Aussie Open and before the start of the indoor tour.

Format: Round robin with single elimination semis and final.

1st round: Navratilova d. Turnbull 6-2 6-4, Austin-Ruzici 60 63, Mandlikova-Jaeger 75 63, Evert-Shriver 64 62
2nd round: Austin-Mandlikova 63 60, Jaeger-Ruzici 36 62 76, Turnbull-Shriver 75 75, Navratilova-Evert w.o.
3rd round: Jaeger-Evert w.o., Turnbull-Mandlikova 46 63 63

Semifinal
Austin d. Turnbull 6-2 6-1
Jaeger d. Navratilova 6-4 4-6 6-1

Final Austin-Jaeger 62 62
3rd Place: Turnbull d. Navratilova 1-6 7-5 6-2

Doubles

SF
Reynolds/P. Smith d. K. Jordan/A. Smith 6-3 1-6 6-4
Casals/Turnbull d. Stove/Shriver 6-4 6-4

Final
Casals/Turnbull d. Reynolds/P.Smith 63 46 76.

Evert withdraws with a high temperature. Jaeger makes the final after surviving a match point (and elimination) vs. Virginia Ruzici. After winning the final Austin lays claim to #1 with "two majors to one" over Evert. Austin was counting the Avon and Colgate as majors while discounting Evert's win at the French. The computer and most experts saw it differently, and Evert finished as #1 in most minds.
