Lucky Loser Jill Schwikert replaces #2 seed Margaret Court in the draw.
The $25,000 first prize is the largest ever in women's tennis.
Two stars fall by the wayside before the first ball in struck. The biggest star in women's tennis is Billie Jean King, who refuses to come to Boca Raton on the grounds that the event is on clay. Since most of the circuit was indoors, why should the tour finale be on a slower surface was her argument. King was also supposedly angry that Chris Evert and Virginia Wade, two non-Slims players, were allowed to play here. Critics pointed out another possible factor-namely that King didn't want to be spanked on Florida clay by Evert.
#2 seed Margaret Court then dropped out when she had to go to the hospital with abdominal pains. Given antibiotics, she made a quick enough recovery by Thursday, meaning she did not drop out of the doubles with Rosie Casals. The pair actually won the event.
Casals gets upset early, clay never being her strongest surface. The most dramatic event of the week was Lesley Hunt vs Janet Newberry. Hunt had 5 match points. On Sudden Death point Hunt tried a drop shot that landed wide.
With Court gone the tournament got the expected final of Chris Evert vs Nancy Richey Gunter. Nancy has never lost to Chris, owning a 5-0 record vs Evert. Could Evert reverse the trend? On a windy Florida afternoon Chris breaks with two perfect drop shots to go up 3-0. After that they traded games-first set to Evert.
The second was tied at 3 apiece. Nancy was up 40-15 yet dropped the game. She was never the same and tired towards the end. Mrs Gunter said afterwards, " I said all week that I didn't know if I was in good enough shape. As it turned out, I wasn't." As consolation Nancy got $14,000, the biggest pay check of her career to now.
With this victory Evert cements her "Queen of Clay" reputation. Never again will she lose to Nancy Richey.
On the youth front Jennifer Balent came through qualies at the age of 13 years and 5 months, making her the youngest person to play a WTA match until Steffi Graf in 1982.
Attendance for the week is 20,000. Most of the later sessions of 4,000 are sold out.
