A different take on Russian #1 is Safina with 26 weeks as WTA #1 and Sharapova with 21 weeks.

Really shows how Kournikova lead the way for the Russian assault and must have had a huge influence on the Russian juniors and even those just on the precipice of breaking through, something she's not given much credit for.

Many of these girls were coming with or without Kournikova, she doesn't deserve credit for anyone else's achievements damn it.

Re: Russian Number 1 ranked players (1995-2014)

I always looked at Likhovsteva as a trail blazer. Not the reason the women started playing, but to have another Russian playing on the main tour, and playing doubles with so many of them as they started their careers (Petrova, Kuznetsova, Zvonareva, etc.) was such a help.

Those stats are quite surprising - I would have thought Sveta in particular would have been Russian #1 for longer.

Dinara Safina, the 17-year-old sister of former Australian Open finalist Marat Safin, insists Kournikova deserves credit.

"Women's tennis, in Russia and around the world, is popular because of Kournikova," said Safina, who lost in straight sets to second-seeded Kim Clijsters on Saturday. "A lot of players want to be like her."

"She was in the semifinal of Wimbledon and in the top 10 . . . I think she did a lot for women's tennis," she added.
