Up to #16 in the live ranking, too! A horse race between her and Sevastova, unless CSN wins the whole thing.

Given Jo Konta will fall behind the pace after Miami, it's going to be a small cohort competing for those #15 and #16 seeds at the French. Actually, given Coco's Madrid points, it could well be #14, #15, and #16 up for grabs. Everyone from Coco down to Gavrilova in the rankings in with a decent chance except Mladenovic.

Honestly that's not much to brag about. People have this idea that somehow Russia is a force in tennis but it really isn't. That's all due to Maria's aura. Russia's results in tennis are pretty mediocre considering the size of the country and its tradition for top sports, especially if take Maria out.

Disagree. A couple things:

1. Much like China today, Russia didn't come to tennis until quite late. Because it wasn't an Olympic sport, the Soviet Union didn't invest in it and had restrictions on how many players could compete internationally. In fact, Myskina and Dementieva might be the last players who grew up in the true Soviet training system and survived to compete as top 10 players in the post-Soviet era.

2. From Myskina's arrival in 2003 until whenever Kuznetsova fell out last season, Russia had a top 10 player pretty much without interruption. I'm not sure any country had that same run of success in the past 15 years. [edit: there were a few months in 2016 when Sharapova's ranking fell out of the top 10 and Kuznetsova had not yet returned to the top 10]

3. "Only" three Russian players have won majors, but there are a further 3 multi-slam finalists (Zvonareva, Dementieva, and Safina). I believe that's better than any country bar the United States since 2000.

4. The additional Russian players who contributed to the depth of Russia's 'bench' in that time is significantly more impressive than most other countries list of B-players. Nadia Petrova ranks among the best players to never reach a slam final. Elena Likhovtseva, Ekaterina Makarova, Maria Kirilenko, Anna Chakvetadze, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are all multi-quarterfinalists (or better) at majors.

Name to me another country with a more comprehensive list of players making the top 20 in the past 15 years. I'm actually not certain the United States has as good a record once you get past the slam winners.

Congratulations! Well deserved!

Russian tennis players are generally talented (well, except one certain)

She'll reach top 10 in the rankings soon.

It's weird how Russia has completely collapsed in women's tennis but has a bonafide contender on the men's tour in Daniil Medvedev <img src="https://i.imgur.com/OGuqcHb.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Confused" class="inlineimg" />
They also have decent Khachanov and Rublev, both are able to pull out an upset.
They still have 3 players in top 41 (39-41 occupied by Russians), but the crises is visible and Ukrajne is kicking their zhopa - currently and with future prospects as well :cheer:

Re: Congratulations! Alexandrova is the new Russian #1

Shocking that Zvonareva is now higher ranked than Sharapova.

Things don't look amazing for Russian tennis right now, but I think there's some hope: Kasatkina could rediscover her form. Potapova could rise up; she certainly looks talented enough.

Re: Congratulations! Alexandrova is the new Russian #1

Pavlyuchenkova will be Russian #1 next week thanks to Toray PPO final (or title) run
I noticed that she was going to become Russian number one. But I assumed she had already been it. Says something about Russian depth for a while and the subsequent demise that depth. Pavs was firmly in the top 20 and not Russian number one and now she's scraping around in the 30's and is Russian number one.

Russian women tennis is such a big mess :tape:

There used to be so many Russian players inside Top 10 and Top 20 :worship:
And now the best Russian player is ranked #36 :help:

Also the stars like Sharapova and Kuz are not getting younger.

By the way, the issue with Kasatkina is that she has no guts at all. She often spins serves in at 100 km/h despite being capable of serving much faster. The players have figured out her junkball game. She would need to become more aggressive but I don't think she has the courage to do so.
