After about 200 posts and over 250 votes in this thread (only yesterday viewed more than 4.000 times) together with that other thread about same Ivanovic/Rogers Cup/WC subject with almost 400 replies and almost 15.000 views i just want to thanks to everybody who participate into this discussions . How this is big numbers i will give You example that official TF thread about Quebec’s tennis legend Stephanie Dubois opened in 2004 has 88 replies so far with about 2.300 views. So no matter how You vote here or whatever You say in Yours discussions in this thread (or that other) You all shows exactly what i want to see – how really is irrelevant Ivanovic, and how really is “nothing special” in decision of some event to reject WC request of player which is former tournament champion (GS champ and WTA#1 also) and player which is used in last five years more than anyone else in WTA for that event promotions!
When some tournament don't give WC to some player it's should not be big deal for tour (except for that player), and of course, there is always much more WC requests than number of WC's exist. If it is happen to former world #1 it's rare and very strange, but still not the end of the world for sure. But sometimes tournaments WC choice deserve some reaction and I cant remember more scandalous case than current Roger Cup/Ana Ivanovic. Ana Ivanovic is former GS champion and just two years ago she played in Montreal like worlds #1 player, but thanks to current rankings problem to commit at WTA premier events she is forced now to ask for WC's or play qualies. Week before Rogers Cup there is event of same 2M$ premier level and format where Ana Ivanovic also requests for WC. As Ivanovic fan I hope she will get that one, and if not I will be surprised and disappointment - but on other hand (unlike Rogers Cup case) there is nothing to say why Cincy organizers MUST to give her that Wild Card this season. If they thinks that they don't need some player with such star-power and former GS champ and #1, or if there is some others players which participation is better for that event - its theirs legit choice
. So this is not thread "how it is possible that anybody in WTA is able to reject WC request of some former #1". This is very specific thread about tennis event called Rogers Cup, WTA player Ana Ivanovic and her 2010 rejected Rogers Cup Wild Card. Because I doubt that everybody here knows what is so specific in this Ana Ivanovic / Rogers Cup relation here is some important facts before You judge.
Ana Ivanovic history at Rogers Cup:
2005 - Brutally abused:
Ana Ivanovic coming at Rogers like 2005 WTA tour biggest new sensation, newest WTA crowd-favorite and media darling. Coming from nowhere like 17yo she already played at GS QF, winning WTA title and have several TOP10 wins. She is already TOP20 that August and around TOP10 in YEC/05 Race. But all that Ivanovic rookie year WTA expansion is stopped and ruined... thanks to stupidity, heartless and blindness of Canadian Rogers Cup organizers! In just 5 months before Toronto/05 injury Ivanovic has better results than in rest of season and whole next 2006 season together! Before that shoulder injury Ana played just 3 slams, but already twice she being owner of GS tournaments faster serve, but after that injury in whole career so far she being just once one of GS tournament TOP3 faster servers (RG/07), because she is forced to correct serve technique and strategy. So whats happen at Rogers Cup 2005 with Ana? Right after her 2nd round marathon 3-set 3-hour 6-4 6-7 7-6 win against Bartoli, organizers insist that 17 years old Ana Ivanovic (in that time she played due Age-eligibility rule) MUST to play after less than hour pause night match in doubles at centre court with local girl Stephanie Dubois against Pennetta-Vives!?!? Instead to withdrew or just tank that match unexpired and utter-tired Ana give her best to not disappoint Canadian crowd and played another 7-5 2-6 6-7 3-set nearly 3-hour marathon match! So Rogers Cup organizers forced 17yo girl under age-restriction rule to be on court 6 hours (which is like 4 average matches in just 7 hours) with about just 30 min pause which produce Ana Ivanovic career first serious injury (shoulder) - she withdraw from event and played injured at USO/05 (lose to GOAT Vento-Kabchi 2nd round) and than paused couple weeks, so same player which played between january-june 41 matches, between july-october(1stHalf) played just 5 matches, and finished 2005 season at #16.
2006 - Ivanovic save Rogers Cup:
This season is destined to be worst ever in history of WTA part of this event. Field is starless than ever and only two superstars of that era which participate into 2006 RC-MD withdraws already at start (Sharapova before her 1st match, Clijsters right after 1st match) and some of other big names withdrew during event like Jankovic and Vaidisova. Which is worse, this 2006 will be remembered also b/c biggest rain problems in event history with several damaged days (so final is played in monday). But than happen miracle - two most attractive names in rest of field start to played theirs seasons best tennis: WTA legend Martina Hingis and most exciting WTA newcomer Ana Ivanovic, so despite all problems they have dream final at end. Because Ivanovic won on impressive way this RC/06 will be remembered for that "star is born" winner (future #1 Ianovic's first big title), not like worst Rogers Cup ever (which will happen for sure without Ivanovic/Hingis success).
2007 - Wrong Decision in Rogers Cup favor:
Real breakthrough season for Ana, but after so many wins and late rounds in the row (won Berlin, reach RG final and Wimbledon SF and won LA) she feels very tired, but she decide to not withdrew and not escape travel to Canada (and focused only at upcoming USO) because she feels some kind of obligation to event where she previous season announce
tennis world that she is coming. Important detail is that this season Rogers Cup organizers Use her for first time like cover girl
of this event (repeat same in next three years) in all kind of promotions. She is in fantastic shape, but mentally and physically not ready to compete, but still come and with her star-power and like TOP5 player add to this 07 event some extra prestige. She lose 1st round match against out of TOP150 qualifier Zi Yan 6-1 6-3 and unnecessary finished (she should skip this 07 RC) her amazing results run since Berlin Open.
2008 - Careers worst decision:
During half-season break at warmup training WTA#1 Ivanovic injured her thumb and her decision to played injured at 2008 Rogers Cup is maybe her careers biggest mistake. After 2 RC three setters she make that injury much worse, withdraw from Olympics and like WTA#1 lose at US Open against #188 qualifier Coin, but which is much worse this injury has fundamental bad influence on her game till these days and we don't know will her serve and forehand will be ever again like prior that injury (will she ever again be elite WTA player), because she and her team decide after that thumb injury to rechange her technique and game style so she starts sometime to looks like total beginner (for example ball toss problems with her new serve). Its unfair to blame Rogers Cup organizers for this Ivanovic catastrophic decision to play in Montreal 2008, but fact is that she played seriously injured that tournament saving whole event from disgrace! That was very special Rogers Cup because thanks to specific time of Beijing OG this 08 event is forced to be played in July so there is two superstars which with theirs star-power overshadow rest of field (Ivanovic and Sharapova), and because playing injured this tournament has tragic influence on career of both this young players which seems in that time like sure bet next IT girls of womans tennis in terms of tour dominance in post-Belgian and post-Williams era. Important to note fact that Ivanovic is ultimate (only) promo girl of that 2008 event with Nadal in ATP part.
2009 - Victim of Rogers Cup promotion:
Sometime Tournament organizers ask little bit too much of tours stars to promote theirs event which sometime damage theirs game and final result at this event, but what Rogers Cup doing with Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki last season in Toronto is one of worst examples in WTA history. Just day before theirs opening matches they force poor girls (OK not really "force", but they use fact that this two girls are such trustful and nice to everyone) to waste only free day which they have for training and preparation for megalomania EXO "Street Tennis" promo action, with all that shooting before and after "event". To be fair early lose much more damage Danish Wozniacki which played that summer career best tennis (after Toronto first round straight set lose she won 22 of next 23 sets - winning New Haven and reaching US Open final). That early lose coast Caro more than it seams because she finished USO/Series at 5th place - if she finish at TOP3 she will reach much more $$$ for that USO/09 final thanks to special bonus. But this is thread about Ivanovic and let's focus on her again - fact is that Rogers Cup organizers use her on inopportune way to promote Canada Open and even maybe start to believe that Ana Ivanovic is theirs own private monkey
2010 - Wild Card Scandal:
Several weeks before some WTA event starts organizers knows which players wants to compete there, so of all girls which want to play in Montreal this team people from RC marketing start to use Serena, Sharapova, Venus, Clijsters, Jankovic, Wozniak and IVANOVIC. This time Ana is not so dominating in theirs campaign like in last three seasons (it's Sharapova this season), but her role is once again very important in Rogers Cup promotion. For those who don't know, since this year major role in US Open series events promotion and media presentation will have twitter
, and believe or not, for theirs official twitter account Rogers Cup don't use theirs logo for avatar, but pretty face of WTA star Ana Ivanovic! But that is not all. Tennis Canada decide to use Ivanovic like she is theirs private little monkey
and this time scandal is out of all proportion. They starts with theirs own demagogic "look how we care about Canadian tennis"
("...we will give advantage to OUR girls in front of famous Ana Ivanovic...") rejecting her request for Montreal/10 Wild Card. Despite fact that she is former Rogers Cup champion (and US Open series overall winner also), GS winner and WTA#1 just two years ago, and how much she doing for this even particularly in near past (and how they use her without limits for selfpromotion). They announce that Ivanovic will not get WC before they announce who will get three WC spots and actually even before Cincinnati (also premier 2M$ event) which is playing before Rogers announce any name of WTA WC's.
So what You think Ana Ivanovic should to do in this situation? Except this poll, there is also one discussion thread about this subject, but please don't even try to prove that there is around at least 3 Canadian girls with better 2010 results than Ivanovic - Wozniak is only Canadian in TOP100 and only theirs player which won more than one match vs TOP100 opponent this season, and also, even with so pathetic results for former #1 standards, Ana Ivanovic is only out of TOP35 player which reach this season (or in last 12 months if You more like) semifinal of event on same level (or above) like Canadian Rogers Cup.
On Ivanovic official site or facebook page there is still without any comment about this, and latest what I notice is her iPod MP3 list. So for start my first advice to Ana is to add this song on her iPod list
