Re: Players who hate tennis/travelling/tour life

It's clear that Tamara Korpatsch has some issues with traveling outside of Europe, given the fact that she routinely skips GS qualifying draws and other WTA tournaments.

Re: Players who hate tennis/travelling/tour life

Anna Lapushchenkova

Too much stress for her. All the travelling and too much pressure. She could not handle it mentally.
A shame because she was a very talented player, upset Azarenka and Safarova at Stuttgart with very strong tennis, some weeks later won a 50k in Kazan, Russia beating Tsurenko in SF and Diatchenko in final (she cried during her matches there) and retired directly after at her career-best and when the future looked so bright for her …

Quote:
Anna, why were you crying? Tears of joy or pain?

Neither, just tired mentally. We constantly play, moving from tournament to tournament and mental fatigue accumulates. And with it these tantrums happen. I cant help myself. Plus today was a very difficult match.

Yesterday you wanted to quit in a match against Lesya Tsurenko?

Yes, but then after playing a couple of games, I decided that I can continue the fight. It was a third match here where I was in such a state. I find it very hard to step on court, Im mentally very tired. Each match is very hard, each ball exchange is very hard. Not even physically hard, but mentally.

But somehow you must overcome this situation. US Open will be soon.

I dont know. I even think I will withdraw from competitions in America.

Let's try to understand the causes of your fatigue. Hard court season just started, turns out you are tired from clay court tournaments?

No, my fatigue is not related to surfaces. Moreover, before Kazan I participated in several hard court tournaments.

And then she was asked about the tennis complex, about which she only had nice words to say.

According to the tournament site, Anna was crying several times during the match (sometimes after winning a point) and refused to speak at the closing ceremony.

I think there's a big difference between hating tennis and being resentful of tennis due to missing home/family.

There's also the distinction between being worn out from the tussle of season long competition/training/travel/etc and an actual chemical imbalance in one's brain that's triggering depression or anziety regardless of the person's fitness/energy level.

Exactly. Hating tennis and hating the stressful tour life are 2 completely different things !

Re: Players who hate tennis/travelling/tour life

Daria Gajos (a German talent from Berlin - who hit with Hingis, and Martina praised her talent).
She loved tennis, but hated to travel and be away from home.

Serena still LOVES tennis, and a lot (you see it and she says it often).
But now that she is old and has a daughter, she hates travelling, especially to Asia.
Her daughter is her priority. She wants to spend as much time as possible at home in USA with her.

Serena: "We have great personalities like Jelena (Jankovic) on the tour."
Jelena: "If I had to pick someone after me, I'd pick Serena."

Re: Players who hate tennis/travelling/tour life

Kimoko Date walked away from the game after reaching the Wimbledom semis in 1996, and ending her career at the YEC. She has mentioned how the travel, the pressure and the like made tennis no fun for her.

Yet the love of the game brought her back 12 years later, and brought her a WTA title and got her ranked as high as 46.

Why can't those issues be simply financial, I think people have assumed she has this phobia/dislike of flying out of Europe despite the fact she's been to the US Open in 2016, 17 and 18. I just see her taking advantage of the fact there are reasonably strong tournaments year round near her base in Germany. If she gets to AO main draw acceptance level and continues to skip going down under then you might have something.

Travel affects everyone in different ways. Many players are probably like you, yet Artem Sitak will fly halfway around the world for maybe only one match (if he loses) and then back again without any ill-effects. I'm sure that there are other players (both male and female) whose body clocks work the same way.

I'm like him in that long-haul flights never seem to worry me because I don't get jet-lag (and don't ask me why not, because I have no idea!), yet returning from a trip over the ditch to Australia completely stuffs me up. Also, I don't travel overseas often enough to simply get bored with the whole experience, which would obviously be a factor for a player if they're routinely changing continents.

Re: Players who hate tennis/travelling/tour life

It's a lot easier to travel now than 20 years ago.

I started travelling for business in 2003 and back then, there was no facebook, no whatsapp, no streaming services, no twitter, no tinder, no travel apps (in fact, I think the word app didn't exist). Wi-fi was often non exsistent even in 4 star hotels and sometimes the ethernet or dial-up required 30 min with phone support to get going.

In 2019, it is much easier to find value accommodation, cheap flights, rebook flights, find people to hang out with, keep up to date with news in your home country, stay in touch with friends and family, watch series and movies on your phone or tablet, find good restaurants and avoid tourist traps. The list goes on.

I think that's a very Italian thing. They are very connected to their home, I had to experience it myself when losing the love of my life going back to Italy with no prospects.

They just need their home and can't really stand the propect of being away from home and family too long.

I interviewed her twice at the Bronx Open and she was very shy when talking about even her own matches. She didn't want the camera on her or the intro (I had to do one for video purposes). She was nice and thanked me, but you can tell she doesn't want to do anything but play.
