Andreescu’s Seeding at WTA Finals?

Does anyone know how the seedlings for the WTA Finals are calculated? Because if we go by rankings, the live rankings have Andreescu going up to a career high of #4 next week, the week before the tournament and the rankings available to the tournament to make seedings. However, in the race to Shenzhen, Halep is 50 points ahead of Andreescu at #4. This is because Andreescu did quite well on the ITF circuit at the end of last year. I think it’s a big difference if she’s seeded #4 or #5. If she’s #4, she’d avoid playing Osaka in the round robin, arguably the most in form player at the moment besides herself. Kind of a rarity to have a WTA finals player have leftover late fall ITF points still on her rankings, makes it an interesting dilemma

I thought it's only the players ranked #1 and #2 that will definitely be in two different groups. Other ranked players (#3 to #8) can be placed in either group.

I really don't care whether Bibi is in the same group with this player or not. I just want her to beat anyone on the opposite side of the net and win the WTA Finals, which I firmly believe she can.

No I think it's pairs so 1 and 2 are separated, as are 3 and 4, as are 5 and 6 and 7 and 8. Otherwise you could end up with a 1 vs 6, vs 7 vs 8 group which would on paper be much weaker than the other group.

RIP Elena Baltacha, thank you for dedicating your life to a sport we all love. You'll be missed but never forgotten.

Pretty sure there is no dilemma. Points from the last year do not count. Otherwise they would have counted the points from the last WTA finals as well and Andreescu still would not have been 4th (Svitolina).

She will be 5th, so all we know now it that she won't be in the same group as Petra.

Points accumulated last year do not count.

The race to Shenzhen only counts points accumulated during the calendar year (ie: 2019 results only).

YEC standings resets every January, with everyone starting at 0.

This is not exactly correct. Race starts the week after the previous year's race ended (2020 race starts next week). Although since there are only ITF events till the New Year's Day normally top players doesn't take part at them or even if they take part these events will not count since they will most probably earn more points during year at WTA events and will not be in their best 16. Exception is Andreescu this year since she got plenty of points by winning US Open, IW and Canada which were enough for her to qualify and also missed most of the season so some ITF25K events she played at the end of 2018 counts to her best 16 for the 2019 race

FITD Tittles(5): Cincinnati 19(P5) Rabat 19(INT) Hobart 19(INT) Zhuhai 18(ET) New Haven 18(PR)

Suicide Tittles(3): Australian Open 19(GS) Moscow 18(PR) Birmingham 18(PR)

I don't mind Bianca winning it all but my preference would be Naomi

Right from the WTA rule book, page 163:

Round Robin Seeding

a. Basis for Seeding
Seeding for Finals Singles Qualified Players and Finals Qualified Teams is according to the Final Race Standings.
b. Seeding Procedures

i. Place seed 1 in Group A and seed 2 in Group B.
ii. Draw from and place the remaining seeds in pairs as follows:
(a) Seeds 3 and 4 (place first drawn seed in Group A and remaining seed in Group B);
(b) Seeds 5 and 6 (place first drawn seed in Group A and remaining seed in Group B); and
(c) Seeds 7 and 8 (place first drawn seed in Group A and remaining seed in Group B).
