Oh my, I dont know what is worse...
1. Ukrainian top getting beaten by Russian kid in Moscow
2. traveling all the way over there to get no points and waste Finals training time
3. that pink dress
Literally didn't really use much strength or cared. Really light hitting, minimum movement and relies a lot on slices, let leads go without a care in the world. A tank worthy performance from Svitolina to make it look competitive
There is very interesting change of generations in Russian team in top 150, new faces and new talents are going up. Kudermetova can play hard as steel, we should see more of her next year...
Hahaha... Basiclina... how dumb to be here!
Dealing with a "knee injury", already qualified for YEC, had to fly here and then fly back to China. Losing 7-5 in the 3rd is a perfect ending.
I really do like Veronica though, I think she has a lot of potential. Not sure how high she can go though, tbd.
When I saw Kudermetova play against Wozniacki at RG this year I knew that this woman gonna be huge for sure. She is talented and know how to end a point.
Looked like an exhibition performance from Svitolina for me, no intensity or groaning like a trapped animal, nothing to gain. An appearance to as not to get a stick up the organisers again.
What a mess from Elaine . This week was a great chance to finally win a title this year, but instead she totally throws away this match (after getting quite a bit of help from Kudermetova). I didn't realize that guy who used to coach Zvonareva is now coaching Kudermetova, but he seems to be quite effective.
It is also very concerning that Elaine still has a brace on her knee . I really hope she takes the time to heal this off season.
The trajectory of this season from Elaine has been so bizarre — she went from being possibly the best/most consistent player on tour outside majors but sucking on the big stage in 2017 and 2018 to sucking everywhere else and somehow notching deep runs at majors in 2019.
Obviously tanking the match after collecting appearance fee. I am wondering how much they paid her. She will probably do ok at WTA finals. But given the pattern of this season - semifinal is probably enough ?
no final for Elina this year, she has win at least one title since 2013, looks like after 7 years she ends the season without a title.
maybe she will raise her game in Shenzhen but after USO loss to Serena she is not playing well at all, maybe that taped knee is still a problem because she had a solid start to the season and since picking the injury she is losing to players she should win against.
After 5 titles in 2017 and 4 titles in 2018, it has been quite the downturn for her this year. She basically peaked only for slams and sucked during the regular tour. Very strange year for her. I'm curious to see how 2020 will be for her.
Perfect. Remember last year Svitolina lost in the first round of the China Open before catching fire at the YEC in Singapore. But yeah I thought it was strange that she didn't withdraw from this tournament (after she already qualified for the YEC). I was reading an article that mentioned the last time Svitolina played the Moscow tournament - she received threats to her physical safety. She was in tears then at her press conference. Maybe she wanted to make some kind of character statement by playing in Moscow - kind of like when Serena returned to the Miami tournament. Who knows...
