Moscow R2: (Q) Flipkens def. (5) Yastremska 6-3 3-6 6-3

She still has it
33y player beating a 19 year old

Can still trouble the youngsters with her game. Dayana couldn't handle her slice

Probably one of the best matches of Kirsten, this year.
5th QF of the year And now quite sure of a spot in the AO MD!

Flipkens is on the way down, so this was a great win for her. She is still quite formidable on IH where her slice stays really low.

She can play fewer tournaments and keep fit she can still do quite well.

Where are the TF trolls to say Flipkens is a scrub and Yastremska a future GOAT? The trolls who claim that Dayana will save tennis from a so-called weak era?

Oh wait, Moscow must be just an insignificant tournament, only the slams count. And that's not counting the slams cakedraws of this weak era anyway. And they're all tired at this end of season anyway.

Only rivalries at the top count. Andreescu and Osaka as long as they don't go through a fall cometh phase, who else?

Sad to see Dayana lose this one, but it was an entertaining match, and a well-deserved victory by Flipkens. Kirsten's FH looked particularly impressive: she produced some nice cross-court shots that threw Yas off balance, and used the dropshot exceedingly well.

There were plenty of highlight-worthy points in the match, too - I hope the WTA actually includes them. Considering how short and low-quality they usually are, that's doubtful.

Since Tianjin started, Dayana's looked a little more flustered and irritated on the court. Perhaps fatigue? Regardless, she's had a season to be proud of - plenty to build on for next year.

Dayana really needs to have more variety in her game, and handle more variety as well. I wonder if that will come with experience, or she'll go the Keys route.

This has been a terrible past 2 weeks from Dayana. The forehand especially is way off and is vastly different from the quality we saw off of it in Wuhan.

I'm praying she can still manage to squeak in to Zhuhai , but with this loss, this was most likely her last tournament of the season. If that's the case, then all I hope for is that she can rest and improve during this off-season so as to become more consistent next year.

Mixed feelings, much prefer Dayana, but, on paper, it mean an easier QF for Belinda to secure that potential 'winner takes all' SF. It will be from BBs POV regardless, even if its not vs Kiki B.

As for Dayana, great season, another title, decent progress in the slams, at a career high (or certainly in an around one), and if she wants to play Zhuhai (which many seem not to) then she'll probably get in.

Love it! Hope K-Flip can keep it going. She has played well indoors this year (her Fed Cup win over Muguruza was superb). Just watching a bit of her doubles match with BMS and she seems to be hitting well there too. Would love to see her win the next round over Bencic, but it will be a tough ask.

So glad Flipkins won this - she needed this win to secure a DE into AO MD. Now she can choose to play qualies in Adelaide or Hobart if she wants to.

I wouldn't say these two weeks were terrible. She racked up 3 wins and honestly, seems to be a bit burnt out. She went from 60 to 23 this year, scored her first top 10 win (Pliskova), beat former top 10 players such as Garcia, Stosur, Sabalenka, Wozniacki, and Azarenka, and won two WTA titles. I'd say we've seen steady improvement and would take that over a sudden huge result followed by a huge downfall or injury like other youngsters (Ostapenko, Kasatkina, Vondrousova, Anisimova, or even Bouchard).

Sure, this loss seems bad on paper. But Flipkens is a former GS semifinalist with a lot of experience and pedigree on IH. I think we'll see Dayana improve even further next year. Hopefully she'll manage her schedule better and not play two dozens of tournaments.
