Tomljanovic cleared to play Fed Cup

About freaking time ffs!

Quote:
Australia’s hopes of winning the Fed Cup title for the first time in 45 years have received a significant boost with Ajla Tomljanovic securing eligibility to represent her adopted nation in the final against France in Perth next month.

Team captain Alicia Molik has confirmed Croatia-born Tomljanovic, Australia’s No.2-ranked female player, has been approved to play in the 9-10 November tie at RAC Arena.

The 26-year-old could be selected as Australia’s second singles player to back up French Open champion and world No.1 Ash Barty.

“It’s a great result for Ajla to finally be cleared to play,” Molik told AAP.

“It opens up another brilliant option for us. She’s always represented Australia well so that’s something I’m looking at closely.”

Craig Tiley, Tennis Australia CEO, added: “We’re delighted Ajla Tomljanovic is now eligible to represent Australia in Fed Cup competition.

“This is a great result and the culmination of a process that began in 2014, when Ajla first played with AUS next to her name at the US Open.”

Australia’s team is set to be picked next week and veteran Sam Stosur is also firmly in the singles mix, having played in two singles matches and the doubles tie during the semifinal win over Belarus in April in Brisbane.

The 2011 US Open champion has won the most singles rubbers of any Australian player in Fed Cup history.

“Sometimes you have to look past rankings and you have to go to experience. You have to go to players who have been there, done that, won’t be afraid of the stage and know how to handle finals,” Molik said.

“At times, it’s also good to throw in someone new who’s exciting and just so desperate and eager to play.

“That’s why it’s so important to spend so much time with the players through the week and get a handle on how they’re feeling about it all.”

Tomljanovic represented Croatia as a teenager in 2010 and 2011 but became an Australian citizen last year, having had permanent residency since 2014.

The International Tennis Federation ruled in 2015 that players could not represent more than one nation in team events.

Tomljanovic launched an appeal on the basis that she applied for her Australian passport before that rule was introduced.

Daria Gavrilova, who is nursing a chronic foot injury, remains unavailable to face a strong French team that could feature world No.39 Caroline Garcia, Kristina Mladenovic and Alize Cornet.

Australia’s last Fed Cup title came in 1974 and next month’s tie is the nation’s first final in 26 years.

“It’s a massive deal,” said Molik, who attended Perth’s Mt Lawley tennis club on Monday to launch the ANZ Community Grant initiative.

“We’ve worked so hard to get to this point … we want to win badly.”

Woah... The Australian rankings are crazy.. They have the no.1 player but no other player in the top 50.. I never even considered Ajla is their no.2 player, but she is.. Then Stosur and Sharma are the only other players in the top 100.. I didn't realise Daria's ranking had slipped so much!

Having said that, the French players aren't exactly in great form right now. They might aswell but Cornet up against Barty and see what happens.

Now she can choke for her country instead of just herself.

A non issue as Barty will win both runners and Stosur will win doubles. The outcome was never changed

france will be hoping then that aus pick her for singles. she is one of the biggest mental midgets on tour and she has plenty of competition.

i still think sam is barty's best bet for success in singles and doubles, at least sam has had some okay form in the asian swing.

Re: Tomljanovic cleared to play Fed Cup

I'm pretty surprised. I've been waiting to hear if she's going back to play for Croatia.

Dokic&Kerber&Serena

Stosur - Venus - Hingis - Diyas - Jankovic - Niculescu - Barty - Sabalenka
Gavrilova - Wozniacki - Kvitova - Zvonareva - Osaka - CSN - Sevastova
Aga - Cibulkova - Lisicki - Bencic - Cornet - Halep - Mladenovic - Davenport - Ostapenko
Some level of love/fascination for Ivanovic, Giorgi, Azarenka, Sharapova, Makarova, Kuznetsova

Sam still has the better chance at winning a singles match than Ajla

To be honest, I was expecting her to going back to Croatia She has no ties with Australia other than dated Kyrgios.

She'd have to apply for an exemption.

.... Just kidding she'll probably choke the deciding rubber from 6-0 5-0 up. But it's nice for AUS that they now have a singles player they don't also have to keep fresh for doubles (like Barty and Stosur).

I have to agree with the others that i'm a bit surprised. Thought she was going to represent Croatia again, i'm not sure she actually even trains here.

That the Aussies were already favourites against the French is irrelevant. They obviously want to secure the bag. Aussies are badly hungry to win that Cup and leave nothing to chances (they don't want to be at the mercy of Mladenovic in case God forbid Ash gets injured between now and then for example). So Ajla is very, indeed extremely, vital. Also because the Aussies want to dominate beyond this year and they know you can't dominate Fed Cup with only one player.
