Talk about capitalizing on your opportunities! Coco grabbed this chance and boy did she run with it..
And the 15-year old wunderkind employed the same technique that got her to her first WTA final and her first WTA title. She backed up her performances against Bertens and Petkovic and then some.
Critical point in the first set: up a break and serving for the set at 15-15 Coco has to charge forward on a net cord that falls short; she gets to the ball and after trading a few shots forces an error from Jelena… and then Coco takes the set
Jelena gets off to a good start in the second set, holding her serve and breaking Coco at love (2-0 Ostapenko); but in Ostapenko’s next service Gauff returns the favor and wins every point (2-1). Jelena breaks Coco again to go up 3-1 and Jelena firms up her lead with a hold for the 4-1 advantage (Ostapenko is playing with less jitters and more smooth, precise power shots). Jelena on the attack with swinging forehand precision gives Coco no defense and the youngster is broken once more at love (5-1 Ostapenko); Jelena closes out the set with an ace.
Coco holds to start the third; she breaks Jelena to go up 2-0…and after that it was all Coco all the time...well almost; it was 5-0 Gauff in the sixth game when Jelena fought hard to stay in the match...and she held. Then Ostapenko jumped all over Gauff's service in the seventh game putting the score at 5-2 for Gauff. Coco gets to 30-40 on Jelena's service and then... game set match Gauff!
Well done young lady; well done indeed!
