Eastern Europeans make the majority of WTA. They are everywhere.

Well I don't classify Halep as a pusher but as a passive player. Passive players do not like to see other passive players on the other side of the court. There is not a lot of pace to work with. Coco likes pace coming at her, Halep and even more so Wozniacki are going to be a bad matchup for her this early in her career imo.

Right on the money. Medvedev and Gauff play exactly the same. A pusher's mindset, getting every ball back, never taking risks UNLESS forced to, at which point we may suddenly see a flash of power, and strong serving. Derivatives of Djokovic, and why not, he's proven that this style wins slams.
To me, it's unexciting tennis. But i guess i appreciate the running and the effort?

Questions: Geographically is Romania not considered "eastern Europe?"

I was referring to the next gen!

The western/westernised players are marketed and hyped so heavily (and often so cornily) compared to the Eastern Europeans like Swiatek, Juvan, Yastremska, Lopatetska, Potapova. I really appreciate how little help the latter have in climbing the tennis ladder and part of me wants to see it triumph over players who've had money and help poured at them since they were 10 years old.

Maybe this is why so many people are taking offence in this thread. I really like watching both Medvedev and Gauff. I've always drawn the line before Wozniacki though.

Gauff should absolutely not be a first strike player imo i think she should continue to be a defensive counterpuncher ,she has all the tools to make it work very well .

Re: Cori Gauff is the best pusher in the WTA right now

I'd like to see coco add some more pop to her groundies, the forehand in particular, but I agree with a few of the posters here that she shouldn't transform her game completely. Her athleticism and scrambling ability are crazy good and she should continue to build her game around being a cagey counterpuncher. If she can tidy up the second serve and the forehand and stay healthy and as hungry as she is, she's gonna be a monster to deal with in years to come. I can't wait to see her on clay next year.

wrong. Watch this video. It's long. So just watch the last set, or the last 2 sets. You'll change your mind.

You will not call her a pusher after you watch that match.

Thanks for posting.. The point starting at 1:56:06 is the perfect example of how 1. she is not a pusher and 2. how she is going to win a lot of matches.

Re: Cori Gauff is the best pusher in the WTA right now

Gauff isn't a pusher, she has a solid defensive game but when it comes to pushers it is a good thing this site didn't exist in the 1980s because every second thread would have been complaining about Chrissie Evert pushing her way to another title.

I don't get why having a solid counter punter style is frowned up when its a legitimate strategy and I wouldn't call Guaff a real counter puncher although she is developing that part of her game, she plays more an all-court game which is more akin to Barty's style with slices and top spin, also she looks to come forward behind her drop shots which shows she is comfortable at the net.

This is getting ridiculous now.

Gauff has been compared to Venus, Hingis and now Barty, whom she plays nothing like.

Are y'all watching her play or what?

Vondrousova is barely a year older than Andreescu. Ditto to Yastremska. She absolutely counts as the next gen. She's a year and a half younger than Osaka.

But I do see your point. Part of me wonders if it's an English language thing. Part of Radwanska's early appeal (that Sharapova upset notwithstanding) was that she was really charming in her early interviews. Remember her rats? What a weird moment in tennis that was.

In comparison, I have no idea how Juvan-Yastremska-Lopatetska-Potapova communicate.

Honestly, a tennis player who creates something Team8 style to market the Ukrainian and Russian and other non-Western talent would likely make a killing. I can imagine a post-tennis career for someone developing that talent pipeline from a marketing standpoint.

Although the next question would be, how many of them would immediately relocate to the US/Spain/wherever if given the early financial resources.
