Serena will likely qualify for Shenzhen

Serena last played the YEC in 2014. She qualified but did not attend in 2015 and 2016. It is unlikely that Serena would play if she did qualify this year but I was curious to see if she'd get in. I noticed that Wikipedia already says Serena will not play but I haven't been able to verify it anywhere else.

In short,
  • Bencic cannot qualify unless she gets a WC to Moscow
  • Berten's qualifies with a Beijing final (def. Svitolina and def. Kvitova/Barty)
  • If Bertens does not make the Beijing final she needs a Moscow final (Beijing SF) or a Moscow win (Beijing QF) to qualify

Re: Serena will likely qualify for Shenzhen

Everyone always takes that Moscow WC and withdraws after one match. Bencic will totally do it.

Dokic&Kerber&Serena

Stosur - Venus - Hingis - Diyas - Jankovic - Niculescu - Barty - Sabalenka
Gavrilova - Wozniacki - Kvitova - Zvonareva - Osaka - CSN - Sevastova
Aga - Cibulkova - Lisicki - Bencic - Cornet - Halep - Mladenovic - Davenport - Ostapenko
Some level of love/fascination for Ivanovic, Giorgi, Azarenka, Sharapova, Makarova, Kuznetsova

To be honest I don't think Bencic is big enough of a name for Moscow to bend down and hand that wild card over.

Don't they have enough of these early withdrawals?

So what happens when a friend or partner holds a different opinion against your favorite?

Bencic would need more than one match even with a Linz win.

Here is what Bencic needs in Moscow based on Linz performance to pass Serena (and qualify if she keeps ahead of Bertens)

Linz Win = Moscow QF (2 wins)
Linz Final = Moscow SF (3 wins)
Linz 1R/2R/QF/SF = Moscow F (4 wins)

Bencic is eligible for a top 20 wild card since she is currently in the top 10

Are they required to award the Top 20 WCs? I thought only International events are required.

For Premier 700 Tournaments, the Tournament Director may award the Top 20 Wild Card to any Top 10 Player, Top 20 Player, past Grand Slam singles champion, past WTA Finals singles champion, past Premier Mandatory tournament singles champion, and/or former WTA No. 1 ranked singles player. If the Tournament does not use the Top 20 Wild Card(s), the Wild Card spot(s) revert(s) to the next player(s) waiting to get into the draw.

Not to say I am quite certain the tournament will award one to Sharapova over her.

Re: Serena will likely qualify for Shenzhen

For Serena’s sake I hope she plays.

If she doesn’t I just really wanna know what Patrick thinks.

She looks more beatable than ever to a lot of the newer girls and she’s more likely to play girls she’s nevertheless played before going forward.

Even if she doesn’t win YEC, I only see it as a super positive thing for her to do.

Someone help me understand

During the USO all the USA commentators were saying that she was done for the year but of course it is not official...

Some fanbot probably edited that part with unverified information. I don't think there is such a rule unless the TF WTA pundits here confirm it with some reference.

Because she only cares about No.24. Work on her fitness in off-season and hire a mental coach or two in order to win Slam F. Losing 4 straight, regardless of who she's playing, says where the real problem is.

Would be strange for her to play meaningless YEC (for her) at 38 when she has not bothered playing for half a decade when she was younger.

Re: Serena will likely qualify for Shenzhen

Bertens wins one more match in Beijing and Serena is out. If Bertens loses to Barty she will need a Moscow Final to pass Serena.

Re: Serena will likely qualify for Shenzhen

Serena stopped playing YEC after she stopped winning USO. She actually considered playing this year but USO let her down once again.

Re: Serena will likely qualify for Shenzhen

Kind of strange timing for this thread because frankly it's quite likely she will not qualify. If Bertens beats Barty tomorrow, or either her or Bencic can gain a few points by Moscow then Wonder Woman will be ninth or tenth in the race. And there's no way she's taking a wildcard to Moscow .

Serena is only focused on slams now. I don't think she will play there, even if she qualifies.
