Osaka F: (1) Naomi Osaka def. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-2 6-3

Naomi

Best match she's played since the Australian Open.

Her BH was sublime today, can't remember a single UFE from that side. TBH, she didn't make many errors anyway - was just so solid off the ground.

Her serve too - 20/20 first serve points won and only 6 points dropped off her second serve. And she wasn't even serving that well, just 48% first serve percentage

She wins her 2nd title of the year and first since the AO, and probably, guaranteed her Shenzhen spot with this title now.

Pavs played ok but her returning was way too poor, just couldn't read Osaka's first serve at all. I thought her 2nd serve return was pretty good but then Naomi defended her first return very well. Her serving wasn't exceptional either, just constantly under pressure on serve, could have easily been 6-1 6-1. Just not a good match-up for her IMO, Osaka just does everything better.

Osaka finally wins her first title on home soil. Next year's Tokyo Olympics will be electric, and honestly I hope she can feed off her home crowd and make some Olympic tennis history for Japan.

Amazing stuff from start to finish. Please don't go another 8 months before playing like this again.

I had a feeling she would win this. I didn't want to speak it into existence and curse her though.
Naomi wanted this so bad. So happy for her. Hopefully the turmoil of the Summer is behind her now. A much needed win for her confidence.

Hopefully she can end 2019 on a high note ... and as the year-end number 1. At the moment, she is a far more deserving number 1 than the current top 3 players.

Congrats on title #4 and kuddos to Pavs, who had an incredible week as well.

PAST: Kim Clijsters - Maria Kirilenko - Ana Ivanovic - Yanina Wickmayer - Tatiana Golovin - Nicole Vaidisova

PRESENT: Garbiñe Muguruza - Amanda Anisimova - Fanny Stollar - Sofya Zhuk - Petra Kvitova - Sloane Stephens - Donna Vekic - Lucie Safarova - Noami Osaka - Katie Boulter

In her acceptance speech, Naomi initially forgot to tell Pavs congratulations and interrupted the guy to say so

Naomi was just too good today and it's nice to see her playing well again. Ditto to Pavs - even though she beat my fave along the way

They took a while to set up the ceremony. Naomi did speak a bit of Japanese then reverted to English, then said "oh wait, maybe I should say this in Japanese", spoke a few lines in Japanese then more English. Then forgot to mention Pavs then put her hand up to tell the MC that she wanted to say something, then congratulated Pavs for a good week

shes speaks a bit more Japanese sometimes during the wowow interviews but I doubt that tv station is available outside Japan. in case great win in her hometown.

Osaka hasn't been as terrible as people have made out this year - she's shown flashes of this form but, due a lot to minor injuries and a few bad matchups, hadn't been able to get anything going. I've always had faith that she'll get through it though - this title was hers as soon as she solved Putintseva in the QF.
