Cool Tianjin Confirm OSAKA SAI VENUS AZARENKA WANGx2 SLOANE, TRUMPS Linz

with the cancellation of Hong Kong this year, the Hong Kong players were redistributed to Tianjin and Linz ... the players have spoken with their commitments and it looks like it was a no brainer for them to go to Tianjin

Tianjin landed Yastremska, the defending champion for Hong Kong, not to mention Grand Slam champions OSAKA, V WILLIAMS, AZARENKA, STEPHENS ... the inclusions of WANG x2, ZHANG, ZHENG will give the fans plenty of local rooting interest as those players make a run for Zhuhai

meanwhile the Linz EL is a bunch of Europeans with the exception of 2 American girls and only has one slam champion (KVITOVA) though SHARAPOVA accepted a WC

Tianjin EL

Linz EL

So you mean Linz has TWO slam champions......

Anyways, Linz still has more top 10 players and just as many top 20 players. SMH.

I doubt Osaka will play...

Good for Venus hope she can make a run there, although she’d probably find the courts in Linz faster...

Both have nice lists

Re: Tianjin Confirm OSAKA SAI VENUS AZARENKA WANGx2 SLOANE, TRUMPS Linz

Both are strong for internationals (obviously helped by the HK situation as the OP says), but yes, Tianjin, if most of it stays together, is exceptionally strong, and one of the best international fields I can recall for a while. A good mix of slam champs, 3 of the 4 best current teens on tour, home interest, and a very low current cut off. It may change significantly nearer the time depending on how players do in the upcoming 2 big events, but for now, it's certainly impressive.

When you consider that 33 of the current top 50 are European (or 37/54), then it's not really too surprising that there will be a 'bunch of Europeans' taking part in a strong European WTA event.

The draws look good, for now... But if you've already qualified for WTF or Elite Trophy, or don't have a chance either way by that point, some might just bail.

Proud supporter of my American girls

LOL what

Linz is all Europeans except 2 Americans

Tianjin only has 6 Asians (Osaka + Hsieh + 4 Chinese) and the rest is a multi-national field including Europeans, North Americans, African, Australian

Both are probably placeholders for those top who players want to qualify for Zhuhai and Shenzhen, watch them dropout like flies once their qualification is confirmed - wrist injury, food poisoning, GI illness, viral disease ad nauseum. I still don't understand how some players fly back to Europe, get jetlagged, play in a tournament, only to come back to Asia for the two events. A good opportunity for the others to get some titles, cheques and points.

Entry Lists v Actual Lists often look very different running up to WTA finals. Would be great if they do all compete though.

Sad for Hong Kong, my favourite (Asian) International event during the fall season. Although I do have a soft spot for Tashkent too, due to its longevity.

Kenin is literally playing every week post USO. Burnout alert.
