Marie Great match by her, though I don't really know how much was Svitolina limited. At some points, it didn't look like it hindered her much, but she did retire, though.
I think Elina's knee wasn't so bad at the start of the match but it clearly got progressively worse in the 2nd set. Had Elina won the 1st set she might have tried to finish the match in 2 sets but she obviously didn't feel she was up to a 3rd set. That said, by the time she retired a third set looked unlikely.
Marie really was on top throughout the match. Only once in 9 services games did Marie give Elina more than one point on her serve. Not shabby. She was very focused today. Served very consistently and played smart throughout.
It's become very clear Marie does raise her game when she goes up against top players. I think she really does relish and enjoy battling against the best players in the game. That is one of the main things that bodes so well for her future. Marie's attitude is one of the best on the tour. She loves a challenge and she loves the big occasion.
As usual she was modest in the interview and happy to be gaining ever more fans.

I think that implies the exact opposite.....she's not going to be automatically drawing top players every event she enters, so she will need to learn how to consistently beat those ranked around and below her.....something she even still struggles with.
I understand Elina's desire to get back to the WtA FInals to defend those points but why does she sign up for 4 weeks in a row starting days after playing the USO semi-finals.
You can bet money on either a tank or dubious Ret/W.O. at one of the smaller ones; or even worse an actual injury that kills her chances at the bigger tournaments coming up.

I asked this question in her previous match thread and someone attacked me. lol lol.
I was so hoping Boozdrinker would knock her out so she can be forced to take a break.
Congrat Marie. Saw you give a hard time to the Compton Queen and became a fan.
Elina Well, I was worried about the knee wrapping, but I didn't expect her to actually retire Disappointing year for her with all these injuries. She's probably not going to be able to make it to Shenzhen now. We'll have to wait and see how serious this injury actually is.
Bouzkova played well and is super talented, though I guess we knew that already from her Toronto run. Hope she faces off against Kenin!
Basiclina was never going to put her heart and soul into everything in this MM. I have no idea why she even signed up for it. Why would she with Wuhan/Beijing starting next week.
Really happy for Marie though. She seems like such a likable girl. Would love to see a SF with Kenin for her.
Well she's #9 in the live race, could be #10 at the end of the week. It's hard to blame her for doing everything she can to get back to YEC, but I see your point. Way more to be gained at Wuhan/Beijing.
Bouzkova is amazing. However she has to work so hard and run so much to win her matches, it's surprising she hasn't picked up a serious injury this year. She must be one of the fitter women on the tour.
