Players who declined just as they reached their peak

NOTE: this does not mean that the player has never again recovered form or never will; so current players who are not performing at their best can be included (even though they may very well rise again).

Unfortunately, some of my faves are on this list.

- Sam Stosur: controversial, because after reaching the RG final in 2010 and winning the USO in 2011 she's still had some good results. Her 2012 was kinda solid and she's reached the RG SF a couple of times too. However, she definitely hasn't been AS good since then.

- Alicia Molik: unfortunately for Alicia, her health stopped her here.

- Daria Kasatkina: 2018 was looking good for Dasha, but since then she's had outrageously bad results.

- Angie Kerber: her 2016 was one of the best seasons we've seen from anyone in recent times, reaching #1 after winning the AO, reaching Wimby final, Olympic silver, and also the USO. A non-slamless #1 on the WTA! Her level dropped in Asia even though she did get to the YEC final. It was shocking to see how bad she was after that; her 2017 was absolutely terrible. She had a good 2018 again, with AO SF, RG QF and winning Wimbledon, but since then has been pretty terrible. Her 2019 is even worse than 2017 (with the hella random exception of the IW final). She can rise again, but definitely a sharp decline after reaching peak goals.

- Ash Barty: a little too early to call this, but after winning Miami, RG and Birmingham and reaching #1, she's been a little...harmless. Not a sharp decline, but one to watch.

- Garbine Muguruza: sharp decline over the last couple of seasons. However, she was already pretty random before winning Wimbledon.

- Jelena Ostapenko: not an immediate decline, because she did manage to win Seoul and has reached a Wimbledon QF and SF since. But otherwise, has plummeted down the rankings.

Who else?
Wiggly, Molok and Perun like this.

Dokic&Kerber&Serena

Stosur - Venus - Hingis - Diyas - Jankovic - Niculescu - Barty - Sabalenka
Gavrilova - Wozniacki - Kvitova - Zvonareva - Osaka - CSN - Sevastova
Aga - Cibulkova - Lisicki - Bencic - Cornet - Halep - Mladenovic - Davenport - Ostapenko
Some level of love/fascination for Ivanovic, Giorgi, Azarenka, Sharapova, Makarova, Kuznetsova

Re: Players who declined just as they reached their peak

The Serbians (Jankovic and Ivanovic) really struggled after 2008, just like Bouchard following her 2014 season.

Re: Players who declined just as they reached their peak

i think Stosur just really maximised her talent in 10/11 despite some major holes in her game. Her serve was much more reliable in her best years and allowed her to play minimal defence (which is by far the weakest part of her game).

Alicia was obviously hampered by injuries for much of her career. Again her game was all about her serve and hit a purple patch with it during her best years.

Very premature to say Barty is decline. Miami was a great tournament for her but in reality the result at the French was more about the draw falling apart and her having the mental fortitude not to crumble. Without doing verification i'd say with a QF, W and two R16 she would have had the best year at slams of any player. she won Birmingham and hasn't had a bad loss really.

Safina, even before the back injury.

Vidasova- Radek ruined her at the worst time.

Zvonereva? Maybe.

Omg how can we forget Mauresmo! An amazing 2006 to retired and outta the top 50 by mid 2007.

Night and day.

Re: Players who declined just as they reached their peak

Shahar Peer comes to mind. After becoming a match win away from the top 10 in 2011, she sharply regressed for the remainder of her career.

Yeah interresting... what happened to her ?

for the active player, i am really concerned about Kastakina !

she's a shadow of herself

Ostapenko is quite ridiculous as well...

Re: Players who declined just as they reached their peak

You can never say never with active players though. We would've added Hsieh Su-Wei to this list after her 2013 season a couple years ago, but has achieved a lot in the past couple years to erase that.

One can say something similar for a player like Konta, who is rebuilding her career very well in 2019.

On a lower scale you have a player like Grace Min, who managed to break into the top 100 in March of 2015, but finished the year outside the top 200, and is currently ranked 370 in the world.
